    scope adjustment question

I have a Savage Axis rifle and it required medium height rings for bolt clearance. When I was bore sighting it, I ran out of elevation adjustment before the crosshairs were on the laser dot (still too high). Do I put a shim in the rear ring to get there, or what?

What kind of rings/base are you using?

Put a shim under the rear base. You can make one out of a feeler gauge if you can't find one already cut and drilled.

You can also cut a piece of aluminum can, it makes a very good shim

I would try a different set of rings.
Also, is it a one piece base or two. If two piece can you swap the front and rear bases, for that matter maybe swap the rings.

If you end up using a shim, it sounds to me like you need the shim in front, or maybe I'm misunderstanding the alignment issue.

I had this happen on a rifle and I went with the Burris Signature rings with the offset inserts

Laser site, so you haven't shot it yet? Maybe the laser is off a little?

It's a Leupold two piece base and medium height rings. No, I haven't shot it yet. I tried using an old school Tasco bore sighter, but that wouldn't even line up so I could see the grid.

oh man, i would bore sight that sucker and then shoot it. start at 25, get on paper and make your adjustments. if you feel confident jump out to 100, if not go to 50 and fine tune at 100. laser or not, nothing tells the truth like bullet to paper.

I have a rifle in front of me with the exact same ring/base combo and the same problem. Very strange--

So, what ring/base combo is right for a Savage Axis?

This /\ /\ /\ /\ is the best solution. Shimming one base can have your scope tube going into the other ring at an angle, and when you tighten down the scope rings, the clamping effect puts a dent in the tube. I've seen quite a few scoped rifles at my buddy's gun shop with this issue.

My Montgomery High school geometry training made me think about this, but I've also seen scopes with shims before. But that's why I asked here. There's a lot of actual experience here. I'll probably shoot it next and see. Thanks everyone!

Update! Please forgive my stupidity. I was trying to boresight in the house. To use a laser boresighter, you have to be at 25 yards. I read the directions (real men don't need directions!) and realized my mistake. I went outside, set up a target to boresight on at 25 yards and all is well. It has plenty of adjustment and the crosshairs move to the laser dot easily. Thanks for all the input, everyone.
