A little Remmy 700 repair help?

I picked up an older Remington 700 from a guy just recently. It was the model with iron sights too. He'd tried to remove the front sight not realizing that the slide was tapered and had broken one of the two screws off that hold the sight onto the barrel. Looking for a way to back out what is left of the broken off screw. I browsed thru the Midway USA catalog and saw some E-Z-Outs that might work although the listing really doesn't specify what sizes they are? I want to remove the screw and plug up both holes with a dummy screw for aesthetic reasons only. Not sure where I can find any E-Z-Outs locally and hate to make a small order and eat shipping (again). Any ideas? Or how much a gunsmith would charge for such a thing?

    thanks

Most hardware and auto parts stores carry easy-outs. You might also try a left hand drill bit.

I've see a few kits at hardware stores but all of them started with a size that was just a little too big for the hole in the barrel. Didn't think about the auto parts route or just a small left handed drill bit. I'm sure the screw isn't in there that tight that a bit wouldn't back it out. Thanks for the alternatives.

I've seen GS's charge $25 for that fix

put your barreled action in a vice with wood plates to prevent marring the finish

with a center punch, tap the center of screw to make a indentation so you can remove filler screw with an easy out

you may need to apply heat if loctite was used on screw , liquid wrench may be another option

You might also check harbor freight. They have an easy out kit that might have one small enough.

will also help if you have access to a drill press

I think I figured it out. Midway has free shipping right now, and I needed a scope for the 700 too. So I checked with them on their easy out set to be sure it was small enough to do the job. Got me some screw plugs to fill the holes, easy out set and $15 off a little basic Lupy VX-1 to go with the free shipping. I've got a drill press, vise etc in the shop so I think I'll be all set to do it up right. Thanks guys.

Harbor freight or Northern tool would probably have it..

Go talk with your dentist and see if he/she has any tiny dental burrs that are ready to be tossed. Take one, chuck in your dremel, and cut the tiny slot for a screwdriver. Apply heat or Kroil or both before trying the screwdriver.
