The back lug has to be free floated basically. That's the easiest way i can explain it .

I put a factory Remington 700 action in 38 with the 26 in bull barrel in an xlr industries element chassis with a Nikon monarch 4-16x50 and it shoots lights out

Correct me if I'm wrong but couldn't you get APR to build complete rifle for same if not less $$$ ? I started to go that route with mine until priced Alamo and I believe they saved me some money. May ck it out.

I built mine like u are
Bought a 300wsm savage action.. unscrewed the barrel nut and slapped on a shilen heavy sporter barrel ..topped it with a 16 power turret scope and she is everything a cheap skate sniper like myself could dream of for around a grand
Good luck and let me know if u decide to diy I still have the go and no go gauge to set the barrel just right.

I just put me this rifle on lay away at my buddy's shop. It's used but excited to start learning to shoot long range.
