Long term that would be the goal. Including a barometer and wind shouldn't be too difficult, incorporating could be an issue though.

Haven't made any decisions on that. Honestly I'm not too savvy on advantages to different OS. I'm extremely open to suggestions now . an Earlier post recommended coding in vba since I have some minimal experience there, although python shouldn't be too tough of a jump if necessary.

I personally like Linux. I've completely abandoned windows. I run Linux exclusively now.

I have windows 7 on my school laptop. I may find a cheap laptop and experiment with Linux some. I don't want to jump right into it with my main laptop as I still need it for school. Any idea what kind of interface would be best for something like this? The pi 0 had an HDmi out I believe, not sure what the other versions have.

Just download virtualbox and run it as a virtual machine. You can tinker with it that way and if you mess anything up, it's all isolated to the VM.

Interesting, can I run any version on there? I'll download that tonight and see what it looks like.

Yeah you can run whatever you want in there. There are even images for MacOSX. I use it to run vms of Kali Linux for pentesting.

Why not program it as a web app and use something simple like Ruby or maybe build it with Javascript so it run on all platforms?

What type of Linux do you run most? A friend recommended mint over Ubuntu, or debian for stability. I'm leaning towards trying mint and using dual booting to get my toes wet.

Only issue with that is I'd have to be connected to run it. I'm hoping to have a stand alone program on the pi that can run it. Then again I don't know a lot about that so offline may be an option I don't know about with that!

On my laptop I run Kali. My home desktop I have Ubuntu-Gnome and run KDE from time to time to break up the monotony. I also have a media computer on my tv that runs Elementary OS. But yeah Linux mint is great too. It is actually Ubuntu under the hood.

That's what I've heard, is that it's a "lighter weight " version so to speak.
