Had the opportunity last weekend to head down to Duval County as a guest on a management hunt. Got in Thursday evening and headed out to pull cards. After spending a couple hours going through thousands of pictures, I found a nice deer that I wanted to target. Fast forward to Saturday evening and my deer made an appearance down a sendero at 250 yards. As we worked to get on him, it seemed like he would never step out from the does to offer a shot. Fifteen minutes of watching and light fading fast I got my opportunity. The shot rang out, sand flew and my deer ran off without a trace of any hit. Talk about disappointed....I was beyond mad at myself and knew I had blown my opportunity. I drowned my sorrows with a couple of stiff crown and sevens then called it an early night about 10:00.
Sunday morning found me back in the same stand hoping he might slip up once more. It was 7:30 with no movement when I finally had a small doe step into a sendero. It was like someone turned on the lights and within a few minutes, I had about ten deer and fifteen hogs on three of the senderos. Four does were feeding to my left and about five hundred yards up a pipelline a big bodied deer stepped out. I had hopes it was him but never imagined, it really could be. I watched him close the distance over avout twenty minutes to 215 yards. I gathered myself as best I could and squeezed off a round. My 308 hit it's mark and my deer was laying in the pipeline. The rest is history and I couldn't have been happier with his character. Great mature deer that weighed in at 210 pounds.
