    AR guidance, help, suggestions, expertise

I want to get into the AR game. Main use will be pigs and maybe a deer every once in awhile. Most shots should be in the 100 to 200 yard range or closer. From all my reading on TBH and other sites sounds like I need to go with something other than the 223. Do I by factory built gun, build one my self (I'm a newbie), AR 15 ( 6.5, 300, ?) or AR 10 in 308? I don't want to break the bank but do want something quality that will last. Looking for a little direction from the experts or at least someone with a little experience.

    Id go .308.

Buy a DPMS Oracle for $500 at buds. Then you can build off of it, or buy something different later on. That rifle will be a good way to decide if you like ARs or not.

AR 15s are pretty modular. If you're trying to be cost efficient, I'd say to find a cheap s&w, palmetto, or windham in 5.56 and invest on another upper. 6.8's, 300s, and even 762x39s are all good choices. If you shop around you can find some good deals and still keep in under $1k.

For your first one 223/5.56 will be just fine. Use the right ammo and you'll have no problems.

As you decide if you like it or not then you can look at alternate calibers.

Go pick up a .308 (AR 10) before you buy one. Suckers are heavy, especially after you add optics and accessories.

If you're not familiar with an AR buy a cheap one in .223 and play with it a bit. You'll learn quite a bit and have a better for what you'll really want on an expensive one.

I had only shot an AR once before I decided to build one. They are super easy to build with only a few tools needed. I went with a Rock River Varmint barrel in 223 Wylde. It is a one ragged hole kind of gun. I'm now in the process of building a 6.5 Grendel upper for it so all I have to do is take the .223 upper off and slap on the 6.5 to change calibers.

223 sucks for hogs some guys say 77gr rounds kill pigs well but that round is $$$, not cheap to shoot. 6.8 and 300 are expensive and hard to find. Ar's are better suited for home defense situations.

I think saying that it sucks is a little much. It might not be the best choice. But it still kills hogs all the same if you do your part. I've killed more hogs with a 223 than any other caliber. And I've killed 501 this year.
I've found Barnes 62gr ttsx work best. But I've killed tons with 55gr fmj.

Haha thanks! And yes I've killed some with 22lr too. In a trap from point blank lol.
Shot placement is just the main part. You can't shoot a pig in the gut and expect it to drop. I don't care what caliber you're using. Shot a 100 pounder last weekend with a 300 win mag in the gut and it ran about 75 yards and stopped and we had to shoot it again.

But OP for your needs I'd say get on palmetto state armory and take advantage of the sales. Complete lowers with magpul stocks are crazy low. Then just get you a complete upper and slap to the two together. If I was you id get a 556 or 300 BO for no far as you'll be shooting.

Just get a 6.8 spc. Perfect round for pigs and deer. Still get the lightweight rifle and ammo is easier to find. AR10s are big.
