Well I finally finished building my first AR. It has a varmint contour SS 1-8 twist 5.56 barrel on it. I built this rifle for shooting steel and predators/varmints. Should I just load up 55gr bullets or try and shoot some heavier bullets for better long range performance? I'd love to try the 75gr amax but worry Either the 1-8 isn't enough or that they'd be too long for the magazine? I'm open to any recommendations. Thanks.

I believe the 75 otm is preferred in the AR. Easier on mag length.

I shoot the 77 gr smk out of my 24" 1:8 stag arms barrel lights out. It works great on coyotes and hogs. It is accurate enough for ear hole shots on larger pigs. Have shot up to 600 yards on steel very accurately. For your uses I say 77 gr smk all the way. I load it on top of CFE223 can get exact load specs tonight. But I get avg 2759fps chrono'd.
