    AR reloading question

Well I finally finished building my first AR. It has a varmint contour SS 1-8 twist 5.56 barrel on it. I built this rifle for shooting steel and predators/varmints. Should I just load up 55gr bullets or try and shoot some heavier bullets for better long range performance? I'd love to try the 75gr amax but worry Either the 1-8 isn't enough or that they'd be too long for the magazine? I'm open to any recommendations. Thanks.

I believe the 75 otm is preferred in the AR. Easier on mag length.

75 gr bullets and 22.5 grs of Benchmark run very well through my 1/8 guns.
Just load 'em so they feed from the mag, you'll be fine.

Just fyi the 75gr amax will not saftey fit mag length.

Don't know about the AMAX but I shoot 77 grain Sierra Matchkings through my 1:8 twist barrel with great results. SMK' s are not recommended for hunting but do great on paper.

Thanks guys. I'm considering the Hornady 175gr HPBT now. What powders have you had luck with and what kind of velocities?

If you want a heavier bullet that is deadly on yotes, deer, pigs the 65 grain game king is a great little bullet. 1/8 is more than enough twist for it and it's usually very accurate.

I shoot the 77 gr smk out of my 24" 1:8 stag arms barrel lights out. It works great on coyotes and hogs. It is accurate enough for ear hole shots on larger pigs. Have shot up to 600 yards on steel very accurately. For your uses I say 77 gr smk all the way. I load it on top of CFE223 can get exact load specs tonight. But I get avg 2759fps chrono'd.
