    project AR

I have had a project rifle I have been working on for the last few years. It is an ar platform with a 1:7 14.5 barrel that has the flash hider pin welded to make it the legal 16. My goal vision is for a smaller easy to carry rifle that is capable of longer shots but stays small when needed, think awesome truck gun. I guess what I am asking is, is it doable to shoot heavier bullets out to 4/500 with any energy left in them. Right now I am working with some hornady 75 gr hpbt and Varget and cfe 223. Any advice ?

I'm shooting the 75 gr Hornady BTHP over a max load of Win748. I'm using that because that's what I started with before CFE223 came out. Today, I'd use the CFE223 or 8208XBR. The advantage to the Hornady 75 gr BTHP is that it will stabilize in a 1:9 twist while the Sierra and Nosler require a 1:8" Not an issue for your gun but there are a lot of ARs with 1:9" twists.

For the range you're talking about you need the heavier bullet. The .223 just isn't a long range weapon. If the 75 gr Hornady doesn't shoot well in your gun try the Nosler or the Sierra. But you definitely want the heavier bullet.

Also be aware that the 14.5" barrel with flash hider will probably cost you some velocity over a true 16" barrel. I've not used an AR at the range your talking about but 400-500 yards is likely at or beyond the maximum effective range of your weapon.
