Can't make up my mind, help me pick a caliber

I'm getting a new rifle next week, a stainless Tikka T3 Lite. Got it narrowed down to two, possibly three calibers.
    -.30-06
    -7mm-08
    -.270

I already have two .270's but they're wood stocks and one got in pretty bad shape last year after spending a week in the rain during rifle season in Oklahoma. Made up my mind then that I'd go stainless and synthetic for a go-to/all weather type rifle. Too much can go wrong with rusting and swelling wood, neither are bedded stocks. So, it kinda doesn't make sense to have another .270 except that I love the caliber. The primary purpose for this rifle is whitetail and pigs and I don't reload so I have to use factory ammo.

So, the .30-06 is appealing because of the ammo selection and availability of ammo and if a rifle elk hunt comes up in a year or two (hopefully) I'll have the means to do that and can jump up to a heavily constructed 165-180 grain bullet and get the job done. So it's more of a jack of all trades and master of none.

Pros: versatile round, hard hitting, wide selection of bullets/ammo
Cons: most recoil of the 3 options

The 7mm-08 is ideal for whitetail and pigs but a little light for elk if this is supposed to be my all purpose rifle. I know it's killed plenty but it might be a smaller margin for error with that caliber. Such a light kicking caliber too for the performance you get, which is a plus.

Pros: light recoil, very effective on deer/pigs, short action (doesn't matter on the Tikka)
Cons: limited ammo selection/availability in stores, might be too light of a caliber for a future hunt

The .270 is what it is. Absolute poison on deer and can handle elk too, although I've heard guides usually prefer a minimum of a .30-06.

Pros: moderate recoil. flat shooting, hard hitting, great ammo selection, can handle larger game
Cons: already have two rifles in this caliber

Nothing above a .30-06 is even under consideration, I'm just not a fan of a ton of recoil and I've shot a 7mm Rem Magnum plenty, that's above my teeth rattling limit

Kind of a secondary question, if I went 7mm-08, what's a premium factory ammo selection? I've seen 140 grain TTSX, Trophy Bonded Tip and Accubonds....anything else I should look at? No matter which caliber, I'll buy 3 boxes of the best stuff and see which one the rifle likes best.

To me: 30-06 is just boring because everybody has one. I love my .270 and have no personal experience with 7-08

I personally like .270 for the reasons you already stated, but since ya already have 2, -06 might be a nice change!! Basically it's whatever tickles your pickle

I personally like versatility and think you should have a .30 cal in your collection. So go with the 30.06

If it wasn't a Tikka, it would be a consideration but since I can't get it in a short action, I might as well go with the .30-06 if I'm having to choose between the .308 and '06. At least that's the way I see it.

I'm a 270 fan but would get the 7mm-08 due to higher bc of bullets. You have to shoot 180 or 210 grain bullets in a 30 call to get equal bc.

If you really want a wrench thrown into the mix look at the Tikka in 260. Rem. Even better ballistic coefficient with 140 grain bullets for long range accuracy. I have been really looking hard at the Tikka ctr in 260.

This. My 45 year old rem 700 30-06 never fails me.

                          I'm not sure I agree with this statement. A 7mm measures .284". A .270 measures only .277". I know that's only .007" but the point is the 7mm is a bigger caliber than .270.

A 7mm-08 can launch a 120 gr Barnes Tipped Triple Shock at over 3000 fps (with some powders achieving almost 3100 fps). A .270 Winchester can launch a 130 gr Barnes Tipped Triple Shock at the same speed.

So what do you lose with the 7mm-08? I don't think much. A little bit if you want to move up to 150 grain bullets; the .270 Win gets you 100-150 more fps there. But if a 100 fps makes a difference then there's something else awry.

                          Don't sell the 7mm-08 short.

270 with hornady 130 grain SST superformance. Rocket ships I tell you and hit super hard! Very accurate as well

30.06 hands down because of bullet selection. You will never be under gunned, especially if you are talking elk. If you get into reloading you'll have a larger bullet buffet of choices. But if you can't handle the recoil then get a smaller caliber.
