    SBR Question

I just completed a lower, but have yet to decide what upper I want to put on it. I do know that I want to build my first SBR. Can I fill out the Form 1 for an SBR if I don't have the upper yet? I know that I want a 11.5" barrel, but I'm still deciding on caliber. If I initially go with a 5.56 upper can I use the same lower for a different caliber upper down the road? I'm new to the NFA game and want to make sure I have ducks in a row before going down that road one way or the other.

Yes the lower in an AR platform (serial numbered part) is the SBR. You file the form with the barrel length you intend to use not any specific brand of barrel or anything like that. If you permanently change the length later you have to send an update letter to the ATF. Also, don't be in possession of less than a 16" barrel until you've got an approved SBR lower.

Go look up the NFA section on AR15.com. That will provide you with a ton of good info. Don't start messing around until you know the legalities of everything. I also recommend setting up a trust before you do anything. It's a lot more trouble to own NFA items in your name than it is as a trust.

Also you can swap around uppers provided you own the upper to restore the gun back to its original approved condition. If you permanently change it you're supposed to notify in writing (length or caliber).

you will need caliber and overall length to fill out the form1 paper. Don't build the SBR until you have the approved stamp back.

you can swap uppers/calibers but must be able to put it back to original paperwork. So just always have the original upper.
