i want to cut off a shotgun barrel

i have an old remington 1100 20 ga with a full choke barrel. i want to cut the full barrel down to 20"-22" so it will be easier for my wife to handle. just something for the house. not gonna hunt or shoot skeet with it. my question is, can i just tape the barrel and cut it of with a pipe cutter then reem out the barrel and re blue the end when dun? or should i take it somewhere and have it done? does the barrel need to be beveled or crowned?

also, once its cut off, it'll be a cylinder bore correct? the choke is in the last 2-3", right?

    thanks

i did the exact same thing to one of my old shotty's

i used the metal hose clamp as a guide for the hack saw and then just cleaned up the burs.

what the barrel bore will be depends on how long the original barrel is with the full choke..

I'd buy a used barrel for $100 off the inet - (see link)

save the original barrel in case you ever decide to hunt

edit: barrel above is a 12 ga. , my bad ..... shouldn't be real hard to find a 20 ga.

I'll look for you - see this link for $109 ... Excellent condition blued Remington LT 20 gauge barrel with fixed full choke. 21 inches long. Plain barrel http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/Vie...Item=505376888

I just hacksaw the barrel off, file it a little to clean it up, a little oxpho blue on it, drill it for a new bead and install one, all good. Just be careful shortening a gas gun too much, it changes the gas pressure needed to cycle the gun. 22" should work, if not you may have to do a little work on the gas ports also.

I'm not certain about using a pipe cutter. But I cut a single shot off with a bandsaw and reemed it. Plus crowned the edge.

Some companies can actually cut your barrel to any choke design you'd like,$$$ mind you and barrel has to be thick enough. I inherited an Ithaca 37 20ga from my grand dad via my uncle who got from a step grand son who had bent the barrel. Uncle took it and cut it off...spray painted it and tried for turkey...pattern was horrible he said. I took it stripped all the ugly paint off of it,and found used barrel for $125 on gunbroker....its back how it should be. I did call Ithaca and cause of the year 1950s they said the barrel was to thin for them to thread ,but named some place in California or may be it was Arizona....but I figured the mod 1960s barrel I got was better route over all!

i don't care about pattern or a bead. only gonna be used to shoot bad guys so hopefully it never gets used! I have 2 of these shotguns. the other has a ribbed skeet barrel and a modified barrel. skeet barrel will probably never be changed out.

lungbustr i may cut off at 23" just in case!
