    30-30. It should be mandatory that everyone shoot at least their first deer with one.

      I shot my first with a .243 Rem 600 Mohawk but agree that a .30-30 is a solid kid choice.

        I started on a .22-250 and still shoot it almost 20 years later.

          I say a 243, 260 or 7-08. I love my 260 and will do all I need in Texas.

            My boys shoot a Mohawk .243 and a Model 7 6MM. Both are kids sized guns and deadly killers

              go with the 22-250 I have several rifles from 300 mag to 222 and my go to gun for everything but elk is my custom 22-250. I head shoot everything even hogs and they don't run off .

                  I don't believe he would have a problem shooting your 757
                  That said my wife has killed a train car load of critters with a 243



                  End the end get him a marlin 336 30/30 it is a East Texas tradition

                    Without a doubt a 30-30. Kids love lever actions, and teach him to use the iron sights before throwing a scope on there.

                      This. I've seen many a kid ruined because they shot a lightweight youth rifle. Too much kick. Get a heavy gun.

                            30-30 would be great for East Texas and a new hunter..... shots will probably be under 100 yds.

                            243/260 are also perfect if the rifle isn't too light. Reduced recoil ammo on a 270 will probably work for him also
