    Duplicating factory hornady superformance

Has anyone had any luck? I know there are a lot of love hate for it. But when it works it really works and for me it really works. Have no desire to buy factory loaded ammo. Only reason I tried it was it was cheap on clearance and I need to break in. Well it out shot the hand loads. So now I'm trying to make it.

I know they make the superformance powder but is that what they really use?

According to Hornady there are 40 different mixes of Superformance. The one available to re loaders is for big case to small neck calibers. Like 22-250 300 wsm and the such. It hits lights out and at 4025 Fps in my 22-250 with 55 gr ttsx

I've heard this duplicates a lot of their loads

          Duplicating factory hornady superformance

          Hodgdon website
          180 bullet
59.7 grains max hornady superperformace powder
          24" barrel
          They list 2840 fps

Factory ammo hornady superperformace 30-06 180 grain SST lists 2820 fps

I would give it a try and see

You could always disassemble a factory load and weight the powder and compare visually. Although not scientific it would give you an idea.

The guys on snipers hide are convinced the federal match .308 load is IMR 4064 and have sleuthed it successfully.

I always heard that they were blends, which is more than I want to attempt in my spare time. Not trying to be rude, but there could be a lot more than just powder causing the difference between your handloads and the superperformance. Were you shooting same bullets, same OAL, etc?

I have also been told that the Superformance powder is a blend. I my opinion, one would be playing with fire to try to duplicate it.
I have heard more negatives about the performance of this powder producing erratic results on paper that I have positives to the point that I have no desire to use it.

I have read the bad things also. But I have seen and read good things also. The speeds that it produces. After 11 loads 3 differnt bullets 1 was around around 1.25 6 around 1.0 and. 5 under .75. The factory 180 superformance would shoot around 3/4" during the break in with superformance. So it shot as good as initial test hand loads. But what it did was 150-175 fps faster with a bullet 5gr heavier. With 20 shots averaging 2943 the same speed as standard loaded hornady 180gr from a 300wm. So with factory load can do that I know I can trim those groups pretty easy. But what I want to do is get the same speed. That's what I'm trying to do. I have the accuracy just need the speed.

If it is in fact a blend, and they have multiple blends depending on caliber etc. I don't know how you could ever duplicate it. The only thing you might do is call them and talk to one of their ballistic technicians to see if he can help guide you.

What I suggest is plug in ballistic data of the two speeds and really see what 100 - 200 fps does in the field. If you have accuracy with the hand loads simply pushing it faster can open up those groupings. I use the cfe 223 in my 223 with 77 gr BTHP and it is lights out. But in my mosin Nagant it is just ok.

I found superformance powder h4350 and h4831sc. And I found a box of factory superformance so going to take some apart measure and see how this goes.

What you found was probably 4350 and 4831sc Extreme, not Superperformance powder. The Extreme is supposed to be less temperature sensitive, but its not necessarily the Superperformance powder. From my understanding, Superperformance doesn't have a number. Extreme is good stuff, but to my knowlege is not the same.

I have all 3 powders. The superformance is the fastest followed closely by the h4350 and h4831. Most hope lies with the superformance and 4831sc do to the lower pressure and higher numbers. Hoping to pack more into the case with the h4831sc vs data of h4831. But we shall see.

Good luck and be careful. IIRC a full charge of 4831sc is going to be close to or at the top of the case, and with a 180 you may have to pack it a bit.
