    Customizing Win Model 70

So I've got a Winchester Model 70 in .270 WIN thats in basically perfect shape but never gets shot for various reasons. My thoughts are on a long term build that begins with a barrel/caliber change.

Now my initial thought was to choose a caliber that was a little odd, but still available commercially as I don't reload. I finally settled on a .240WBY for a fast whitetail/antelope gun because the bolt face is the same diameter and I'm a big Weatherby fan.

Then I got to reading about enlarging the bolt face diameter and thought I could make a good, all around big game rifle in something like a 7mag (or another caliber with a .540 bolt face).

My question comes with the enlargement of the bolt face. Is it cost effective to go this route? Would buying a new bolt be cheaper? Is it something that PacNor or APR could do? What kind of cost am I looking at for a barrel change and new bolt and/or redoing the current bolt?

    7mags are boring.

I had 2 turned one into a 257 wby. I still like my 7mm mag but wouldn't build one.

      Build a 280 Ackley Improved

Uses the same 270 BF , and can nearly duplicate 7 mag velocities with less powder

      Hand loading is recommended

The 280ai is tempting but I'd like to stay away from reloading. I see nosler has some loads which might work.

          Any more ideas?

I've got one in 25-06 CRF that's in the same exact shape.

338 06 or 35 Whelen. Factory ammo available for both of them. I'd like to have a Whelen someday

I think the 280ai looks the best so far

Lets say I DID decide to open up the BF. What am I looking at in terms of cost/finding someone to do it?

Once you open the bolt face , a SAKO or M-16 extractor will likely need to be installed. This might be a good time to bush the bolt if you're gonna have custom work done to the bolt

I've seen prices vary depending on the gunsmith and how soon you want the job done

might be $100 - $300 for a complete job and what services you decide on

if you're gonna go this far, you may want to sell your existing rifle and go all in for a custom rifle

I have shot both the Nosler 140 AB & 150 AB in 280 AI and both were very accurate for factory ammo. Taken several deer and hogs with the 140's with great results as well. But as Blake mentioned, you will need hand loads to realize the full potential of this round.

I will rarely grab either my 270 nor my 7mag if my 280AI is available now.
