Agree with above 1:7 is the best for it. But I have a 24" stag arms barrel in 1:8 that shoots lights out with 77 gr BTHP. so cant really go wrong with either.
Hornady says a 1 in 9 will stabilize their 75 grain match. I see lots of people shoot 55s in 1in 7s. In other words, either should work fine. Sierra says a 1 in 8 will stabilize their 80 grain matchking.
1-9 is perfect for 55 and decent for 69 or 77
1-8 is perfect for 69 and decent for 77 or 55
1-7 is perfect for 77 and decent for 69 or 55
At least that's what my local gun smith told me. Seems to be true as I now have a 1-8 and a 1-7, and the 1-8 won't shoot the bigger bullets as well as the 1-7
1:8 is plenty unless you want to go heavier than 77 grain. A 1:9 will not stabilize the 77 grain Matchking or Custom Competition bullets or 75 grain AMax; it will stabilize the 75 grain Hornady. That said, a 1:7 won't hurt though a benchrest shooter would shy away from any twist faster than necessary.
