Put a rifled barrel on 870 20 gauge. Holds less than 2" at 100. Have only killed 3 deer, but none traveled. Lighter, less recoil than 12 gauge and all the knock down you will ever need,

I have the maverick and put a rifled barrel on mine. Pair this with the Hornady SST slugs and it's very accurate!
This was my first choice both then I started wondering if I should for something better...

Sure mine is not the best but I have an Rem. 870 wingmaster with a 12 ga. rifle barrel and use Breneke TKOs. I have reached out to 100 plus yards and suprised myself a time or two. open sights at that. Guess I am lucky or just the fact I am on a budget with life.

Can't go wrong with this choice. It's about $300 all said and done. I haven't missed one deer yet with this set up. It's solid and the for price you can't beat it.

Dad and I use Savage 220 (20 gauge) to shoot deer or to 250 here in Iowa. Most we talked to said the 220 is a better option for longer range because the 20 Guage slugs generally stabilize better and maintain velocity longer. Whether this is true the deer 240 yards away don't seem to have time to care when they drop dead plus 20 gauge is lighter shooting and with depredation tags 3 deer at a time isn't impossible, although 2 is more common.
