Remington 700 5R vs SPS Tactical

I am connsidering purchasing eitther a Rem Mod 700 5R .308 or a Rem 700 SPS Tactical .308. The rifle would mostly be used for whitetail hunting from a blind, but I wolud like to get into target shooting (out to 500yd) in the future. The 5R would either 20" or 24" barrel, the SPS Tactical would be 20". For those of you who have one or both of these rifles, do you think the 5R is worth the extra cost (price is almost double that of the SPS tactical)? Thanks.

My 5R with 24" barrel with reloads shoots well under .25", good luck to you!

reload: 42 gains varget, 175 match king, BR2 primer and .005 off lands.

I've had both, but sold the sps tatical. May have the 24" barrel on the 5r cut down to 20, but no comparison between the two. 5r all the way!

Thanks for all the replies so far. Are y'all still using the factory stock/trigger that comes with the 5R? Would there be any real difference between the 24" and 20" barrel performance wise? The 20" barrel would come threaded, the 24" not.

Swamped out for a timney 510 trigger, takes seconds to do and large improvement.

most of the shooting I've done with my 24" 5r has been stock...except the nightforce on top.

I have recently added detachable bottom metal with AICS mags and a timney trigger, but I haven't shot it too much since then.

Factory stock, but Timney trigger. Performance difference between 20" &24" barrel.....roughly 100 fps velocity loss and alot handier and a little lighter for stalking. If you plan on shooting heavy bullets for long range.....I'd stick with the 24" barrel for the added velocity.

There both heavy guns so its not like im taking either one on back country hunt...they both shoot great. I give the edge to the 5r as the finish is alot better, bolts smoother and the stock it better/will never need to upgrade the 5r unless you want to change triggers. I shoot both of these guns regularly as paper guns. If using in truck/blind the 20 inch is nice but I still think the 5r is wort the extra cash

I've had both and the 5r is what I have now, it has a much more finished smooth feel compared to the sps, both are accurate but I would think the sps would make you a more durable deer rifle those hogue stocks are tough, hs precision stock and stainless not so much

I've owned the original SPS Tactical, SPS Tactical AAC and Now the 20" 5R Milspec.

Hands down the 5R is worth the extra cost.

I feed mine 50 grains of RL17 behind a 175 grain Berger VLD in Lapua Brass with Fed 215M primers and it averages 2809 fps and shoots under 1/2".

Thanks for all the input. Looks like the 5R is definately the favorite. I haven't heard any bad reviews on them. I wasn't aware that so many folks had them. Glad I asked. Now to decide between the 20 and 24 inch barrel. I'll have to handle both again and see which one I like best. I do not reload yet, so factory ammo will be my only option for now. When I start reloading I'll have to revisit this thread to get everyone's favorite recipie to try out.

Federal gold medal match with 168 smk's is hard to beat for factory ammo
