A friend of mine has a .300 Remington Ultra Mag that he will be using to hunt this season with. It's my understanding that he isn't incredibly enthusiastic about using it for a few reasons, one being it is expensive to shoot. I suggested that he change barrels to something he will be happier to use but he was telling me that since it's a long action, he wasn't sure what he could change it to. Any suggestions? I'm not informed enough about conversions to help him out any more than just the suggestion lol.

What could you change a .300 RUM into?

OK, let me clarify a bit.....if he wanted to change it, where is the magical "list" you speak of? Where can he look at a list of calibers and choose? It's a sentimental rifle so he doesn't want to get rid of it. It was me that suggested he change calibers so he felt more comfortable shooting it more often but I don't have a clue what it takes to change a caliber.....but I know it's possible ; )

The Remington Ultra Mag family-7mm, 300, 338 and 375's have wider feed rails to accomodate the larger diameter cartridge body. I'm not 100% sure, but this would likely cause feeding issues on a standard magnum such as a 7 Rem or 300 Win.
You could possibly re-chamber to a WSM round but the ammo isn't much cheaper and the cost to re-barrel would never be re-couped in $ per round savings. The cheapest route, if possible would be to have a smith remove an inch or two from the barrel and re-chamber.
Since he doesn't want to sell it and understandably so, I'd keep it as is before modifing just to save some coin on ammo cost.
BTW-the 300 RUM is a great round, I'd keep it as is.

I'm not buying this, my 300 WM was re-barreled to 300 RUM with no issues.
