    Barrel Threading--Practice Makes Better

Waiting for my Form 1 to be processed so I can build my suppressor, so I have been practicing on my lathe so I can thread a barrel or two in addition to my Savage Hog hunter .223 which is already threaded. Short piece of barrel I threaded a few weeks ago. Longer stainless piece I threaded today. Short piece was harder working so close to the chuck, but still showing a lot of improvement. Having fun with it, anyway.

How'd your concentricness (not sure that's a word) turn out?

I used my live center and just chucked this one up for practice. When I do my barrels, I have set screws on the outboard throughbore of my lathe to adjust the outboard rear end of the barrel and a test rod to put in the bore to check concentricity. The 17HMR will have some leeway if I am not perfect because the bore of the suppressor will be about .280 or so for .223. But, the closer to center I can get, the less it will affect accuracy. I am a true amateur with the lathe, so I am doing a lot of learning.

          Sounds good to me.

            What lathe do you have?

And, do you have rods for every bore you use? I like indicating in off the bore with a tenths indicator and my 4 jaw.

Are you single pointing the threads or using a tap?

It is an old Rutland Taiwan made 12x36 lathe I picked up at a school workshop auction for $500 when they were replacing their equipment. Has 1 1/2" throughbore.

I have an indicator rod I made for .17 caliber, and will make more for anything I thread in the future. Right now I have the 3 jaw chuck on it, but it also has a 4 jaw chuck I will use for the threading of an actual barrel.

Would not use a tap to thread a barrel.

1 1/2 bore is nice. and at 500 thats even nicer.
