My new lightweight rifle....
Well after listening to the GreenScreens recommendations I decided on the the Remington Model 7. Glad I listened and jumped on a rifle. Made my first purchase from Gun broker. Ended up with a 7mm-08 Model 7 that came with 2 stocks. One is synthetic which is actually nice and the other is the original wood stock that is in good shape. Ok some things that caught me by surprise. There isn't a barrel date code for me to look the age up. All I see is the serial number. Also there is the J lock on the cocking indicator part. I've never seen a Remington with that. Around what years were they doing that?

get rid of the J-lock, it is a PIA which effects lock up time and accuracy
introduced around 2000 and disct'd around 2005 due to public backlash
go to Brownells and buy a new bolt shroud assembly
did you recv the J-lock green keys with the rifle ?
call Remington to confirm date of manufacture ... 1-800-243-9700

The date codes were listed on the box from late 1999 until late 2001, and not on the barrel. That is a factory birch stock, not the checkered walnut. Those were used on the Youth Model guns and those guns were priced about $125.00 less than the walnut stocked versions.
The ISS, or J-lock firing pin assembly/shroud is easily replaced. Brownells usually has a few versions in stock.

depending on your budget, you may want to look into a replacement trigger
Timney will set you back $125
Jewell around $215
due to the Rem faulty trigger media frenzy and litigation, I know several GS's who quit working on Rem triggers

Buy an aftermarket trigger. Well worth the scratch

So mad at myself. I pack up the rifle for the range. I get there and have everything set up and I realize I forgot my shooting bags. Not even a bi pod. Did shoot 3 rounds to get a feel for how it shoots. Having a trigger job done is a must. I could hardly pull the trigger. Makes me think this rifle has never been shot. Its like Remington put it on the hardest setting before shipping it whenever it was mad.
