Winchester Model 70 338 wont shoot

I bought this gun from a member on here. I can't get it to shoot better than a 4" group at 100 yards. I've heard some other people say the same about some Winchester 70's. Anyone have a clue to why or what is wrong with these?

You tried different ammo types? Ran through all the scope mounting screws? Checked the action screws? Is barrel free floated? Tried a different scope (especially on something with that much recoil)? How fouled up is the barrel?

I have had all of the above be the cause of a rifle not shooting to my liking.

4" group should be just fine for that caliber......all you have to do is hit the animal......anywhere

Is it the one with cheap synthetic stock and paper thin barrel. I had a 300 win mag model 70 and that thing kicked like a mule. Bought some good quality tally mounts and a 4-12 40 Leupold scope and finally found a load that would group about 3" at 100 yards. Lucky to hit paper at 200. Glad I got rid of that thing.

How long is the barrel? Sounds like whip.
            Shortening the barrel could help.

I've scrubbed the barrel and checked the screws. Action screws??? I'm hoping its not the scope. But it very well could be. I'm trying one other type of ammo this weekend to see if it likes it. Then I'll swap the scope. It has a Leupold on it but I bought a brand new Leupold a couple months ago that was bad, so you never know. The barrel is not floated.

Yes, cheap stock but I wouldn't consider it really thin on the barrel.

Check to make sure your screws attaching stock to action are tight or haven't backed out on you I have had this happen before. Also sometimes taking a dremel and free floating the barrel can help. That is all I know to check on one and after running through most of these steps I usually find something screwy and it will fix the issue. If it is the rifle I am thinking of that is push feed instead of controlled feed they can be shooters, mine in .270 will hold its own if I do my part. But it really comes into its own when I put it into a better stock.

If these don't fix it head over to otherside of the ranch and post over there lots more knowledge over there.

Cool thanks for the help. I'll try doing that to the stock. I bought a Savage B-mag 17WSM that I had to do that too. POS gun.

I have the same gun it loves the cheap old green and yellow Remington ammo but hates the federal premium loads. It's very picky on rounds for some reason

I've got a Mod 70 Featherweight in .270. When I got it I could only get 3 - 4" groups at 100 yds. A friend of mine who was one of the premier stock makers in the US finally showed me how to fix it. We checked all the action screws and made sure the barrel was free floated. We then used shims under the barrel at the tip of the forearm to put upward pressure on the barrel. This gave me 1" groups at 100 yds.
