    Custom/long range guys

Trying to decide on a scope. What scopes is everyone using. Post em up so I have some specific ones to research.

I just bought the Vortex Viper HST. 6x20x50. I'm not ready to fully endorse it, but it is not a bad entry level option.

I also have a few mueller scopes. Lower end option, but good value for the $.

Imo, neither can compete with the nightforces or other expensive scopes. It's all about what you can afford.

Well, you know I am using the 3-15x42 SWFA on mine, but we won't go there this morning, lol. Even thought it has been rock solid on dialing for me on my Creedmoor.

For about the same price as that I have a LE friend with a pretty fair amount of LR training and experience that is running a Horus Raptor 4-16 on a Remmy 308, and he likes it a lot. He dials it all the time and hits real consistent with it out to a grand. Having said that, he just bought a new Accuracy International in .260, and the glass he put on that one is a Vortex Razor HD. He has lots of great things to say about that scope but I haven't looked through it.

My friend down is Lubbock has several of the upper end Vortex, the one he uses on his West Texas Ordinance built 6.5x47 is the Razor HD Gen II. I have shot that one and was very impressed with it. Just that level of glass is out of my budget.

IOR Valdata would be another good one to look at IMO. You don't hear about them as much, but no flies on them at all. They are a solid optic. And of course USO, Nightforce, and the upper end Leupold.

In the "budget" range another one I hear lots of good things about is the Bushnell Elite Tactical. About a grand or little more, but supposedly they are on par with some optics costing quite a bit more. Might be worth doing some research on and checking out.

i'm using a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 on my 7/300wsm. i know some have had troubles with Vortex but mine has been solid and i'm very happy with it so far. Price wise i'd say it's at the entry level for long range work.

                I have several LEU Mk4's and quite a few VX3 LR scopes ; 4.5-14x50 and 6.5-20x50

recently purchased a Burris XTR II Tactical 5-25x50 34mm tube which I have not mounted yet

                define your budget :

                < $800

                $800 - 1000

I started here. Am I in the right neighborhood or am I completely off?

Picked up a Vortex Razor HD II 4.5-27x56. A bit on the heavy side, but I like it better than the night forces I have been behind.

bought it off Snipers Hide 6 months ago when theses scopes were hard to find

a woman shooter won it during a competition match and she is sponsored by NF

she had no use for it and I bought it NIB

zero stop, illuminated , pretty much a NF clone but less expensive in price

I'll eventually mount it on my 6BR and shoot it

Exact recommendation is hard without knowing more info about what type of rifle it is going on, and how you are planning on using it. Prairie dogs at 600-800 is a radically different game than shooting a Precision Rifle Series match or banging big steel plates at the range. Their are lots and lots of scopes suitable for long range work of different types. Some are more suited to certain tasks than others.

The best way to start is by asking yourself questions and narrowing down the field on exactly what you want the rifle/scope combination to do for you. What style and caliber of rifle is it going on? What ranges and type targets will you be shooting? Are you after "groups" like in F class, or "hits" like in the run and gun comps? Will it be a range gun or will it double into hunting? Low light considerations? Budget concerns? Weight a consideration? Target size will dictate magnification range. These are just some of the factors to think about. LR shooting is a broad category, you need to start narrowing down what you want to accomplish and match the optic to the task.

I just got a Bushnell 3.5-21x34mm with the G2DMR reticle. Haven't gotten to mount it yet, but the glass is NICE! By far the nicest scope I own. It's a little heavy but the clarity is better than I expected.
