    What are your opinions?

From our colleagues at NRA's American Hunter (Official) What do you think? Are they right? The myriad selection of rifle cartridges today has a metric ton of overlap, duplication, and some...

Most over rated? Anything that is not a 30-06, 223, or 44 magnum(in a revolver). I am talking of hunting in the lower 48 states. The reason I go with these is simply because they are the gold standard, all new cartridges invariably get compared to these for a reason. There are tons of guns chambered in them, ammo is usually available anywhere, and they simply work. However hunt/shoot whatever you like and don't worry about what a writer says you should/shouldn't like.

It's a dumb article.. for a few reasons. he's going off the assumption you start with zero rifles.

If you are given a 300 win mag, there's no reason to buy a 300 wby mag. True.. but what if you own a 7mm rem mag and want something with a little more umph.. 300 Weatherby definitely would fit that bill in a bigger step up than the 300 win from a 7mm.

Then there's this "overlapping" some calibers do have.. but that overlap can also save your *** too. Think about our current situation with rimfire ammo.. do you really need to own a 17 Mach 2, 17 hmr, 22 lr, and 22 mag? In overlapping thinking. No. 1 or 2 of those will do everything all 4 can.. but then shtf and neckbeards are waking up at the crack of dawn to plunder the local walmart shelf.. and look around.. what's gone? 22lr and 22 mag... while 17 hmr and hm2 is still readily available. So just taking a one sided simplistic view of the issue is not dumb. It's ignorant.

Too many variables out there to say "223 is a dead cartridge"

American hunter post some quantative data or shut up.. no one cares "how you feel" or what some random dood said at the range to you about how he feels because he's squeezing 15 more fps out of an out dated cartridge with no industry components in availability.

Nono, youre looking at it wrong Coach. Saying 223 is dead is giving the gun industry a reference point to lock it away as evil ammo, and no one will mind when it gets banned.

.223/5.56 is crap, overrated, and dead. I will collect your unfired stockpiles for a small recycling fee

It's an opinion article. I put no stock in gun writers opinions

Stupid article. He didnt even want to write it from the way it sounds.

I know I would have picked 5 entirely different cartridges.

Its an opinion piece and he is entitled to his opinion. Even if it is wrong.
