    I have a question?

So I bought this ruger American predator 20" 1/14 barrel in 22-250. It's super long (like colonial muzzleloader long) with my suppressor. Im going to use it in the next couple varmint comps. think I should cut it down to 16? Ditch the suppressor? Or leave it as is?

    Ditch the sup for sure

      A 22-250 with a 16" barrel is an expensive-to-shoot .223

        This is where I'm leaning.

Now lets take a look at what a short barrel does on a 22-250. When I collected the velocity on the factory barrel, it was done with the PVM, so that is the average velocity we will use. Coming from the 24" barrel we lost 258fps. Dividing that among the 8" of barrel removed, we come to a 32fps per inch of barrel lost on average. I would bet the fps per inch from 24-20 was considerably lower than that from 20" to 16". There it is, the hard data I was looking for! Now, when you take a look around and see people regurgitating that 50fps per inch number, you can realize just how terribly misinformed they really are. I've done similar testing with a 223rem and 308win... and both were closer to 25fps than they were to 50fps per inch.

Hell no don't ditch the suppressor. I don't care how long it is... quietness is worth it.

Colonial muzzleloader long you say!?!?! Ha ha

If I really felt the need to suppress I would chop it.

Reload. Ream the chamber to 22-250AI. Cut to 16". You should be able to make up the velocity loss with the AI.

Quietness is worth it? Wear ear plugs! Even with a sup the dang yote is still gonna know your shooting at him. To them it's still pretty load. I would rather have a rifle that's easier to maneuver. Also without the sup you will shoot falter.

I assume you meant faster or flatter. Patently false claim. Suppressors do not alter the velocity enough to make a difference.

Interesting concept. Take a cartridge that needs a long barrel to burn all the powder it holds, cut 8" off the barrel and add more powder then expect velocity to be equal to what you started with?

I'm not sure if any of you guys watch oneal ops on YouTube, but he has a pretty slick gun. 18" 22-250 suppressed. Only its 8 twist instead of 14. I may leave every thing as is then get with Alamo precision about building me one something similar.

20" in a 22-250 is already shorter than it should be. Id run with what you got and build a 223 w 16" bbl

Lol. You're right. I don't have a clue about suppressors.. chamberings.. rifles. . Barrel lengths...

On a totally un related note. It took me a little while to reply because I was busy not l learning stuff.
