Something got on my nerves today. I've bowhunted for almost 20 years straight now but since I had kids I started buying rifles again. The only rifle I've owned since I solely took up bowhunting is my 338 win mag in model 70. When I did rifle hunt years ago there were several popular cal's. 270, 30-06, 243, 308, 25-06 and 22-250 just to name a few. Over the last 6 or 7 years I have bought several rifles. Sticking mostly to the guns I'm familiar with and like. 30-06, 25-06, 270, 22-250 and 270 wsm along with my AR and 338. New Academy opened up here and I've been waiting for them to get ammo stocked up. It's been about 2 months and they still don't have several calibures. They are stacked with boxes on boxes of 223, 7.62, 300 blackout and about 15 boxes of 50 cal. Have a decent number of 30-06, 308, 270, 30 rem and 35 Whalen. I asked the guy in charge of the ammo when the rest of it would come in. He asked me what I was looking for so I told him the standard hunting rounds. 6mm, 243, 25-06, 22-250, 338 win mag, and so on. The guy tells me they don't order the unpopular rounds. Has things changed that much where those guns are not used? I see them everywhere else. I actually buy my 338 and 270wsm shells from Academy in Austin. I can see maybe not carrying the short mags but the others? I don't get it.

The only thing I can tell you is that I very, very, very rarely buy ammo from a brick and mortar store anymore. I'm all about supporting my local economy (even the big name stores that employ local people) but their prices are either 25% higher than online or they just don't carry what I want (maybe I'm unpopular too?).
Use this website www.gunbot.net It checks availability/prices at online retailers and is the quickest way I've found to compare what price is "good" being that it changes every few weeks.
I order on Sunday/Monday and usually have my ammo in time for the weekend. I make a bulk order for my office about once a month and we come out way ahead by splitting the shipping.

I've gotten to where I order most of my ammo and have recently started hand loading. Even with the hand loading game, it's hard to find component around the Houston area. Most retailers only carry a limited selection at best.
Midway is a good place to start on the ole inner web.

I think it is the Academy guy just trying to make more money but being bad business. His way of thinking is probably one of filling up the shelves as much as possible with calibera that are popular in semi auto rifles. Lots of people buy multiple boxes at once of these calibers and do it often as opposed to the average hunter who can get away with 1 box per year. Not saying its right at all, just pointing out why he probably does it
