    Reloading ?

So, I'm very new to reloading. I'm hand loading .308, prepping, measuring brass and COL. I am getting some inconsistency though, because some of my loaded shells will not allow the bolt to close. I mean, they fitfine and don't seem to be binding, but when I go to lock the bolt, it's super tight. Ideas what I'm doing wrong??

Lower your resizing die a bit.

Where is the press mounted? If there's a decent amount of flex in the mount location it can cause inconsistencies when resizing the brass. That can cause the shoulder not to be resized back far enough causing excessive headspace which would make it ddifficult to close the bolt like normal.

Other cause would be not seating the bullet in far enough, but there aren't too many production rifles that have the lands far back enough for that to be an issue if your rounds still fit in the magazine.

did you full length size the brass , and bump the shoulder back ?

as stated above, you need to determine bullet seating depth ... bullets likely seated out to long not allowing you to close bolt

don't force it or you could stick a bullet in the lands and powder will be dumped all in your action , or bolt handle could be pulled off ... I've seen it happen before

read this link .... use a Dremel tool to make a tiny slice in brass neck (reduce neck tension) so bullet can be seated when chambering round . Do this with a dummy round, no primer or powder . Take measurements as this will be your max seating depth OAL

Yes, been full resizing brass. Need to lower the sizer it sounds like. I'm using a Lee Classic hand loading dies.

Blake gave you some good info. Load a dummy round in the gun with a bullet set out. Chamber it and the lands will leave a mark on the the bullet. Take it out and measure it with calipers. Place it in your seating die and screw it down till it touches. Then keep measuring and seating it down until it's 5-10/1000s shorter than when it touched the lands. Lock it down and you are ready to do live rounds.

Is your brass trimmed to specs?

Full length resizing. Your handle should "cam over" as the case goes into the resizer.
You are trimming the resized case, yes?

I had the same issue when I started reloading. I also have a lee press. My solution was adjusting the resizing die and making sure I didn't short stroke the handle. Being a rookie I would only run the handle down until I heard the primer pop out.
I also asked this same question here.lol

I use this method along with this digital headspace gauge. http://www.larrywillis.com/
