    Fast Twist 22 caliber Cartridges

Ok let's talk 22 cal. I just sold my 224 texas trophy hunter last year and I'm looking at building another fast twist 22cal gun. I just can decide which way to go. I have been hearing chatter about a 22 creedmoor. Is anyone else shooting anything in a fast twist 22 cal pushing 75 - 90 gr bullets at 3300 fps or faster?

I believe a 22 Dasher is capable of those speeds with 70-75 class bullets

I am shooting a 1:8" twist 220 Swift. The plan was to shoot the 75 AMAX or 75 Berger, but I haven't got around to working those loads out yet. I was just playing around with the 69 SMK before I got started on load development, and it will shoot those buggers into little bitty groups at around 3300 fps. Been knocking coyotes flat with them so far, so haven't changed over yet. I am about out of them though, so fixing to start testing the Bergers and AMAX.

Friend of mine in Lubbock is on the list to have Clayton at West Texas Ordinance build him a 22 Creedmoor as soon as his barrel gets in, here in a couple months. He has a Krieger barrel ordered for that project. From what he tells me on the ballistics, it should be pretty dang sweet, bettering the old Swift by a couple hundred fps or better.

      5 shots, 69 SMK at 100 yards.

I have the same caliber that you sold. I have 1:8 Lilja. It pushes 80 grain berger vld's at 3550 pushed by 45grains of RL22. I've killed 240 lb whitetails, mule deer, lots of big hogs, and a pile of coyotes. Very few took another step shot right in the shoulder. Very rarely get an exit wound, but it looks like a bomb went off inside. Killed a coyote two weeks ago at 586 on the first shot. My favorite all time rifle. If you don't mind me asking, why did you sell yours?

Do you know what the case capacity is for your swift. Ideally a cartridge like the swift would be nice so u would not have to be making brass but there aren't a whole lot off good brass companies making swift brass to begin with.

Well I was having a hard time with resizing brass and for some reason I built the gun on a Ruger M77 tang safety action. I had the gun Cera coated and it was tight going back into the factory stock that I had already bedded. I could not get it to shot like it had before i had it coated. I just couldn't make myself drop the money on a McMillan stock. There are not many options for after market M77 stocks. So I just sold it. Is your 224 on a short or long action. I hand mine on a long.

Have u ran ur 224 through a crono to check that velocity?

Got any more load info? I have had a hard time get mine to stabilize.

Mine is 700 long action. Yes, I chrony all my rifle. I re-check every time I change powder lots as they all aren't the same. As long as I use Winchester brass, I have had no sizing issues. I load mine where it touches the lands so sometimes it gets a little sticky. I put sako extractor and tactical bolt knob and it will pull the brass even if it leaves the bullet in the barrel (only had that happen once).

Load info pretty well set out. Load just where it touches the lands by .005". Standard primer. Winchester brass. Competition Redding dies. 45 grains of RL22. It was the first load that I tried. I've gone up, down, tried other bullets, and I just keep coming back to it. It's old "one holer" load for me.

Sweet. I have really been considering building another one. But the 22 creedmoor has my curiosity going.

I'm not familiar with that cartridge.

It's suppose to have 53.5gr of case capacity. Essentially a 6.5 creedmoor necked down to a 22 with the 30 degree shoulder.

this is my 22 Dasher from around 1992 ??

Rem 700 SA , single shot that was polished mirror fine , Lilja barrel

McM stock that was a baby blue white mcswirly .... color and contrast looks horrible as this pic was taken with a Sony Mavica floppy disc digital camera from back in the day .

pretty sure I was spitting 52 gr Bergers at close to 4,000 fps

Rifle was built by an elderly gentleman in Thompson Falls, MT as he used it to hunt elk. Paid $800 for the rifle and custom dies ... sold it a few yrs later to buy a 22-250 Ack Imp , snow white/black mcswirly stock

this was my "go to" jackrabbit gun when I hunted Ozona

No idea what case capacity is on the Swift, but I have been shooting one for 20+ years. Shot my first one out, 3000+ rounds, but it was a 12 twist. The last round of brass I just bought for my new one was Norma, it is great brass. Really I just love the Swift, but a 22-250AI probably makes more sense. You can fire factory 22-250 to get the brass, and the brass will last longer too. Speeds will be about the same as a Swift once you max out the 22-250 AI case.

Well see from what I have gathered u can run 22250 brass with long OAL and fire form brass for this 22 creedmoor. But ur gaining more case capacity.
