Actually the old ones had a hard rubber butt plate.

Wood is easy to sand and refinish. (could have been re-done 30 years ago and look aged)
just saying

edit: maybe take the plate off and see if there are "other" screw holes??

It don't really matter that much I was just curious.
The shotgun is in great condition considering its over 75 years old
Serial number dates to 1940 right before we got into WWII and everything changed ...

Model 12's came with this hard plastic butt plate....U could order the red rubber pad..but most had the plastic plate....
