    Best scope for 35 whelen

I've got a Remington model 700 in 35 whelen and was wondering what's a good scope to put on top of it. I plan on using it for big hogs, nilgai, black bear and possible elk. I'd like to get a scope with an illuminated reticle for low light evenings. I'm not really up to date on what's new and there are so many options. I will say that I would like to stick to under $500 for the scope. I don't like to put on a scope that cost twice the price of the rifle

Had a 2x7 on mine but it is certainly capable of shooting out to the range of a 4x12

I like the Nikon scopes for that price range, not sure if any of them have illuminated reticle though.

Let me know hw it shoots once you finish it, looking at getting a Rem 700 classic chambered in 35 whelen. Id like to get an idea of the rounds accuracy and I dont know anyone who shoots one.

I had a Leupold VariX 3 1.75-5.25 on mine and liked it a lot.

For an illuminated reticle, look at the Leupold VXR 2-7. Should be able to get it in your price range.

Love the 35 Whelen. Super cool hog hammer!

Thanks for the recommendations so far, I've done alittle online window shopping. I've always just been so use to buying a 3x9x40 or 3x9x50 and calling it good, all my rifles have those. I'm wanting to put something different on this Whelen and appreciate the feed back.

For an illuminated reticle, look at the Leupold VXR 2-7.
I'm really leaning towards this setup. The online reviews have all be great and it seems like a good fit for my gun/caliber. How do these scopes work out to 200 yards or so? I don't think I'll be shooting much farther than that with the 35 whelen.

I'll be sure to update this thread when I get it all set up and ready to hunt. I plan on doing some nilgai and oryx hunting in March so that should be a good test for the gun.

The 2-7 is plenty scope out to 200 yds, IMO. Take a rifle with a 3-9, turn the magnification down to 7x and see if its enough magnification for you.

The reason I suggested the 2-7 is that its nice to have the lower magnification at closer ranges. Makes it a little quicker to pick up your target if you are hunting in the brush.

I also like the illumination on the VXR because it goes down very low. Its nice to not be blinded by your illuminated reticle right at dark while waiting on that big pig!
