    stupid pistol question.

Hate to come across as a complete idiot, but would someone school me please, lol.

I've been looking for a pistol in .357 Sig. When I'm going through adds or see a pistol listed somewhere, the title always lists #s/models but not the caliber. And then again the caliber isn't listed in the add. G19, G26, P223, P229.... etc....

Are models caliber specific and everyone gun savy knows them, or what? Sorry for my ignorance but hey, I'm a bow guy. :-D

And some of you are probably tired of the pm's asking...... "uh.... what caliber is it?"

    Something I never knew so.......

Thanks in advance for enlightening me.............

    It depends on the brand.

Glocks are all caliber specific. Like a 22 is a full size .40, the 23 is the compact and the 27 is the subcompact and they added a practical/tactical longer slide 35.

The same exact guns and frames in a 9mm would be the 17, 19, 26 and 34.

I am not a Sig guy but I think some of their models can be in various calibers like I think the full size P226 comes in a few selections.

You have guns like the S&W M&P which comes in .40, 9mm, .380, .22 and .45. They are all model M&P but they put the caliber at the end like the M&P40, M&P9, etc. and the put a "c" if it is a compact (equal to the subcompact Glocks) such as M&P40c and M&P9c.

People tend to know what they like such as a few Glock fans might get together and throw about model numbers and everyone knows what they are talking about but have a 1911 fanatic (and Glock hater ) come into the room and it probably all sounds like gibberish when people talk about better guns.

For Glock as an example, you can just view their website and it is broken up by caliber/model numbers. You will see that the .357Sig comes in models 31, 32 and 33. (standard, compact and subcompact)

So the answer to your question is, all of the above.

Each Glock model only comes in one caliber.

Listed by size, smallest to largest

      9mm: 26, 19, 17, 34

      .40: 27, 23, 22, 35,

      .357sig 33, 32, 31

      .45acp: 36, 30, 21, 41

      10mm: 29, 20

      .380acp: 42

Sigs come in different calibers in each model. For instance a Sig p226 could be .40, .357sig, or 9mm.

      Confused even more? haha!!

I believe that folks who fail to list the caliber are losing potential customers. I also don't know the caliber of every Glock model or other manufacturers and sometimes am too lazy to do the research. Therefore I will just pass over those adds, same thing with location.

                Derek,
I have to ask - Why does it have to be a .357 Sig? Are you basing your entire pistol purchase around the cartridge you want? I would suggest you first find a pistol you like - something that fits you, has the features you want, within your price-point, etc... Keeping in mind the cartridge, but not letting it fully sway your decision on which pistol you purchase.

An ill fitting pistol without the features you want, but in a cartridge you are dead-set on, will probably bring you much less enjoyment (and comfort / accuracy) than a proper fitting pistol decked out with the features you enjoy, in a cartridge you find suitable in that particular brand / model.

                All the best,
                Glenn

Thanks for the advice Glenn. I know your right, but I just want something w/some punch. I know very little about pistols (obviously). Just bought my first auto about 6 mos ago (SW 40) and haven't even shot it yet, lol. Actually I have a .25 auto (u can laugh now - ) but that don't really count, lol. I've been told that the .357 Sig will come closer to deterring a hog (walked up on em in the dark a few too many times).

Plus, I want to add a few pistols to my arsenal (most of wich prob won't ever be shot). Want a .45 eventually, too. As well as a 10mm, in due time. Heck, I might even throw in a 9mm at some point, if I find a good deal. But right now I think the .357 Sig would be cool, so its first on the want list.

Thanks guys for helping me out instead of laughing at my ignorance. :-D

                    Another reason I love TBH.

personally when it comes time to hog hunting and choosing a pistol, i would go with a 10mm. i know people with a 10mm and 6" barrel who wouldnt use anything else and sometimes use it for deer hunting.

as far as glock models go and wanting to know the caliber- i use the website i listed below.

You are not alone. When searching for a gun or interested in one, I often have to google it to answer some basic questions that could have been put in the ad. It's already been answered (glocks model->caliber, others maybe.)
I don't have all the glock models memorized, just the ones I own

Great information from the GS...my contribution...NO question is stupid unless you don't ask! Lot's of very knowledgeable folks here and MOST are very accommodating to help. Those that make you "feel stupid as you said," ignore them and keep on asking! I've never owned a Glock but have a lot of friends that do, so I'm educated now! At the time I changed professions as an LEO, no department I was around used them...guess that reveals my Old F..t status!

there is no such thing as a stupid question. only one close to that is a unasked question.

I agree that the 10mm would be better for hunting them but..... I'm not planning on pursuing them w/a pistol. I just wanna keep em at bay while entering and exiting my hunting area in the dark, w/a bow in hand. Would rather not need the pistol at all. I hate walking in amoungst em in the dark! Lol.
