Need some recomendations for a scope. It's going on a CZ 527 varmint in 17 hornet. Gun will be used for small varmints all the way to coyotes. Would like something 12+ power and 40-50 mm lens. The thing I'm looking for the most is a fine crosshair for small varmints at long ranges. Price is flexible but would like to stay at +\- $300

If i upped my budget up and still wanted a mid range I'd look into a VX3 4.5-14. Buy used and save money.
For tiny targets at distance you want clear magnification. For that reason I'd personally step up into the 18-25 top power variable scope. Just because it's going on a small caliber rifle does not mean you should put crappy glass on it.. it's usually just the opposite. You can get by with a decent 3-9 or 1-6 on a pig/deer rifle because your target is larger.
When you start looking at a 8 inch target at 400 yards you will want a clear and high power view of it.
Just my opinion.. so take it for what it's worth.

I have a CZ-527 American in .223, so I will jump in here. That CZ is a very nice, trim little rifle, and you don't want some big honkin' piece of glass on it, ruining the balance of it. I have lots of rifles, with lots of different scopes. I have had several on and off that CZ trying to find my perfect match. Some I liked, some I didn't.
The one that it started with, and the one that ended up back on it for keeps, is a Vortex Viper 4x12x40 side focus with BDC. It was $400 though Arrowsmith on here at the time (5+ years ago), no idea what it runs now. But it really fits that little rifle, just sayin'.
Plus, something else to think about on the CZ is the interference between some scope eyepiece bells and the bolt handle. That is one of the (very) few pitfalls of the 527. Get too big on that end and the bolt handle will scrape as you cycle. Calhoon makes a replacement bolt handle that is milled out to give more clearance, but mine has been just fine with either the Vortex or with a Leupold VX-III. That is another good option, the VX-III in a 4.5x14x40. Pretty good, but to me the vortex just is a bit sleeker and matches the lines of the rifle better.
BTW, I love my 527. Easily one of my favorite rifles.

I've been looking at both the Viper and Viper HS along with the VX3. can you post a pic or PM me a pic of your rifle?
