    Which AR stock?

Picked up my first AR today. CDNN had a pretty good deal on a good coyote gun.

    But the fit....

The stock is too short, and it's too straight. Even when I get a scope mounted, it feels like it is going to still need a little drop. I'm sure I can find an adjustable butt plate that would help. I know they make adjustable stocks, but do any of them extend out long enough to fit like a rifle normally fits? Every AR I've ever picked up had a really short LOP. I know that is advantageous for tacticle stuff, but I'm gonna be shooting it like a hunting rifle. I'd rather have it fit me well, if possible. I would love it if it shouldered and fit like my Weatherby Mark V. (I know....it's an AR...)

What stock should I be looking at for it with all of that in mind?

I have a magpul ACS that I like a lot. It provides a good cheek weld and extends far enough fit like a full sized rifle.

not sure on the stock, so no help there. But, I have noticed that one of the AR's i have has a "commercial" buffer tube and that it extends 3/8-1/2" longer than my other "Mil-spec" buffer tubes. so that is one way to get some extra length.

there are several $150 plus stocks that have threaded but-t plate and cheek plate adjustment

Shane check out the Magpul and VLTOR sites and look at their stocks. Like metioned above make sure you order one to fit your buffer tube.

edit - Forgot to mention BCM.

The ACS might solve the LOP issue, if it extends out longer than the fixed stock on my rifle. But does it allow you to add drop? In other words, can you lower the butt plate so that the top of the butt plate is lower than the comb (top edge) of the stock/cheek rest?

This pic illustrates what I'm trying to solve. This guy, like me, can only get just the bottom point of the butt plate to his shoulder while getting his cheek down on the stock. You can shoot like that, but I'd rather get the butt plate down so it fit me better.

Ok...first... 24" barrel and you want to make OAL longer? I can dig the "I want what I want" thing... but man this thing is going to be a plank before long.

Second... too straight? Its gotta be straight to function. So im not following... Is the scope to low or to high? you can combat that with higer/lower mounts/rings.

Third... Adjust out longer. YES they make buffer tubes that accept adjustable stocks. And yes they make them with a lop like normal hunting rifles. Theres tons.

So clarify a bit before I start slinging out suggestions.

I may just get a 3-way adjustable butt plate to put on the existing stock. Something like this would probably give me added LOP as well as more drop.

Then I'd need a higher comb. I could do that too though.

To fit me correctly, the top of the butt plate needs to be lower than the top of the action. Most AR stocks are straight with no drop. The top of the butt plate is level with the action. See the pic above of the guy shooting with the butt plate sticking up above his shoulder.

I want it to fit me like my Weatherby. On a monte carlo stock, the butt plate is lower than the top of the action. The raised cheek piece gets your head in line with the scope while the butt plate is dropped down into the pocket of your shoulder. More ergonomic.

I know it's a long rifle. I'm cool with that. I wanted a little more velocity. It's shorter than an 18" barrel with a can on it still.

I'm a hunter, so I don't need a tacticool gun. I just want a gun that fits me right and kills a coyote. Weird for an AR guy, I guess. That's probably why I've never bought an AR. But I'll enjoy it once I get it the way I want it.

this one looks like it will do as you want. those two support rods look like they have several inches of drop for movement.
