    Weatherby vanguard??

Found a weatherby vanguard in 270 mag for 480.00. Good shape wood stock no scope. Is that reasonable?

They are generally good shooting guns, but imo you really need a 26" tube for the 270mag.

I've only messed around with the first and looked at the second online. So I don't have personal experience and wouldn't want to slight you with an unfounded personal opinion ...

Found this in an old Weatherby forum :

"There are several differences between the series 1 vanguard and the series 2. I own a series 1 vanguard synthetic in 270 winchester. The new S2 has a bead blast matte finish on the bluing vs the spun finish blue on mine. The stocks look to be quite a bit different in feel, with the griptonite panels on the S2. I personally haven't gotten to check out an S2 yet, but hope to soon. The S2 synthetic stock is gray in color with the black grip panels. The S1 synthetic stock is all black. The S1 has a 2 position safety, vs the S2 which has a 3 position safety, which allows unloading with the safety on. The accuracy guarantee is 3 shots in < 1.5" for the S1 vs 3 shots in <.99" for the S2, both from a cold barrel. Finally, the S1 has a single stage trigger vs the 2 stage trigger of the S2. There may be other differences that I'm no aware of, but these are the most obvious ones."

If it doesn't say Series 2, it's an original. The current production basic wood stock model, the Sporter, goes for about $640 new while the Deluxe is pushing $900.

Does it come with rings and bases? Without them, I'd say that's getting on the pricey side.

I am not 100% sure but I believe all the S1 rifles have a 2 position safety and S3 use the 3 position safety.

This. In order to really get all you can out of a 270 or 257 Wby Mag you really need a 26" barrel.

if it has a 3 stage trigger it is a series 2. i have two series two one in 270 and one in 7mm mag great guns very accurate and just an awesome gun for the money.
