I'm wanting to build an AR for the first time. I'm new to this and I know I want a 6.8. What parts of the build are caliber specific? What parts can be mixed and matched between different brands, and what parts need to be from the same brand? Thanks for any help yall can provide.

As stated above only 3 parts are caliber specific to the 6.8.
The rest if the parts can be used interchangeably. There is a quality difference in parts but nothing says you have to use parts of the same manufacture.
That being said, "Frankenrifles" built from a hodge podge of parts are typically much less desirable if you ever decided to sell the rifle.

Ok guys thanks for the help. I wanted to build one because I felt like I could make it lighter than any complete AR build. If I were to buy a complete build or matching set I was looking at the Wilson Combat, Bison Arms (although I'd have to buy the parts and assemble), or a Rock River (just because I found one at my local gunshop).
Mike D I saw your 6.8 in another thread, it's a sharp looking rifle.

If you want to build one have fun!
You will need to buy or borrow a few specific tools but it's not hard to build them.
I don't necessarily know that you're going to save a ton of weight over a factory rifle but you can definitely customize to your liking.
Thanks for the comment on my rifle.

If you are wanting a 6.8 spc (great hunting platform, i have 2) go over and join 68forums.com, there is a wealth of info on the latest and greatest everything in the 6.8. And they are great guys willing to help out.
I have a bison upper that shoots great. Although rock river makes great guns, see which chamber those are cut with. To get the most out of the caliber make sure it is a SAAMI spec II chamber. I know at one time all the RRs had spec I chambers which will pressure spike with some factory ammo as well as hold you back if you reload.
