    Rem 700 build

Alright fellers I am getting ready to send my 700 ADL chambered in 25-06 in for a tune up. I am looking at sending the barreled action to Pacnor to have them install a new barrel and true the action. I'm looking for a little guidance and suggestions as far as contour and twist rate.

Right know my thoughts are a 25" sendero contour, super match grade stainless, fluted with 6 flutes.

I am considering having it chambered in 25-06 AI, I will be hand loading but I like being able to shoot factory ammo in a pinch.

The purpose of this rifle will be general Texas hunting use and I would like to be able to stabilize 115-120 grain Barnes or Berger bullets. That brings up the twist rate 1:10 or 1:9. Also how many grooves do y'all suggest? Polygonal?

This will be a slow build as I will be finishing as the finances allow. I will be looking to pick up a take off wood factory ADL stock that I will open up to fit the new contour until I can afford a new stock. If you have one let me know.

Coming out of this I am hoping for a 1/2 MOA rifle that I can use from 5-500 yds on deer sized animals. So you've heard my thoughts and I am looking forward to hearing yours.

have you called Chris @ PN to discuss your build.

tell him your rifle's intent and purpose as he can run the numbers to tell you the exact twist needed for optimum stabilization.

he will explain the pros / cons of polygonal rifling as well as 3, 4, 5, and 6 groove barrels

my friends rave about the 3 groove barrels in 17 and 20 calibers. Ask Chris if he advocates a 3 groove in the quarter bore

FYI , I have a Rem 700 Varmint Special wood stock in very nice condition that I plan on selling. Also have the bottom metal if needed . PM me if interested

      Blake,

I have not called pacnor yet, just brain storming.

Do you know what the barrel contour of the original varmint specials were? That is kinda what I am wanting to replicate. A cross between them and the modern sendero.

Ok so know I'm second guessing my choices on barrel maker. What do y'all think about Hart barrels?

Another side note and maybe this is where I should have started. I have $700 to spend and I am wanting to get a barrel chambered and fitted to my action. I am also wanting the receiver squared and lugs lapped. So what do y'all think??

Hart runs around $350. Chambered, fit and crowned is running me $350 and $200 for trued action.

blueprint/true action and bolt , stainless select match grade tube, fit, crown , chamber to caliber of choice

PN can do all the above for $575-600

the Varmint Special / Sendero barrel contour is so popular it's labelled as that on most all custom barrel manufacturer websites.

HART makes an awesome barrel and does excellent GS work .... their delivery time is gonna be close to 1 year

Only thing I can add is to consider the 280AI vs the 1/4 bore. you are thinking of as it's a better overall round on that 30-06 parent case.

Mine is hart tubed as well.

There you go throwing a wrench in the gears. I've thought about the 280AI. Honestly my problem is I am indecisive and know what I want but I'm not always sure it's what I really want.

I was thinking of having my Rem 700 25-06 done up nice with new barrel, but Blake convinced me to me go with the .280AI. But I don't have a use for the 25-06 since I just had the .257 Wby Mag built.

I have a 700 BDL that my gunsmith floated and bedded and lightened the trigger on for about $150 and it shoots unbelievably well with factory ammo. Need to put a bench scope on it and shoot it from a gear shift front rest for grins as that is the only way you can truly see how well a gun is capable of shooting IMO. Based on how it shoots on a standard rest with its Vari X II 3x9x50, I believe it would shoot well under 1/2 MOA in that scenario.

I have love for the 25-06 but im not loyal to it, i know it works very well and it has been poison on everything i have shot with it. After thinking about it i am wanting to build a gun that will cover any hunting scenario i may find myself in. And to do that i am thinking a 280AI might fit the bill better than the 1/4 bore.

What barrel length are y'all thinking for the 280AI? I am figuring on sticking with 25" fluted.

Pacnors website list the weight of a 25" sendero contour with 6 20" flutes at 4.04LBS. I would like to stay under 10LBS fully outfitted. Does anyone have a reccomendation for the fluting length?

I will try and call pacnor today and discuss all of this with them as i'm sure they will have all of my answers.

I'm pretty much set with going with Pac-nor due to the wait time and being able to get all i want done under my initial budget of 700.

alright so i did some more looking and digging and below is a list of prices for essentialy the same barrel. 25" sendero fluted

                          Krieger 475
                          Pac-Nor 435
                          Hart 435
                          Lilja 470

With that being said i would also like to hear some smith reccomendation to get pricing on chambering and fitting to my action, considering the prices are all about the same.

Also out of the above makers who do y'all suggest, i'm looking for the best i can afford, quality and accuracy are the most important to me but price will be the deciding factor.

                          Thanks

I have a Hart built by HCR and a Bartlien built by my JBJ Custom Guns and both are shooters.

With that said I have seen Blake recommend PacNor for a one stop shop way too many times to question that this is a great way to go.
