    Custom rifle actions

As some of you know I had a couple of custom guns stolen a couple of weeks ago. It looks like the insurance is going to pay fairly well on them (Pretty happy with farm bureau) so now I need to replace them. They both had trued up rem 700 actions and shot GREAT! But this time I am looking at going with a custom action. Been looking at surgeon, defiance, big horn etc.

The 3 rifles I am going to build in the near future are going to be a tactical style .300 win mag, a lightweight 280ai for a couple of mountain trips I am planning and a 6.5 something or another for general texas hunting. So those of you that have had some of the higher end custom actions tell me what you think. Are they worth the added cost? Or do you wish you would have put the money towards something else. I plan on a nightforce NXS 5-22x50 for the 300, leupold mark 4 ( not sure on this one as I want the lightest scope possible but still durable with good glass) for the .280 and Swarovski z5 for the 6.5. But all that depends on what I spend on the rest of the gun.

    Custom rifle actions

Look at stiller for your actions

About the same cost as truing up a rem 700. But you still have a rem 700 when you are done.

I've visited their shop in Wylie Texas. The know what they are doing.

This is a great question. I'm not building 3, but wondering the same thing on a 6.5!

Dang that sounds nice. I'm getting ready to start a build but can't see the extra coin for a custom action.

        What's the advantages of it?

Smooth cycling and resale value over a trued action.

I second the Stiller actions. Great actions.

Stillers are fine. I have used tons of them. I would also look at the kelbly atlas, bat VR, or borden alpine for a short action 700 clone. Bat and borden also have long action counterparts.

I've shot and owned em all and would probably go with a Borden Alpine or Timberline .... followed by a BAT , and then Stiller or Kelbly

I love my stiller. I have used a freinds BAT rifle and it was also a dream to shoot.

I have two stiller predator actions and a bighorn arms. Love them all. Just had this 18" 308 barrel spun up at S and S Precision in argyle on Tuesday. 2nd powder charge I tried produced the following 3 shot group at 100. I'd say Stillers are good to go!

                        CaddoKiller,

First, sorry to hear about your guns. Hopefully karma will catch up to the thieves sooner than later. As others have said, there are allot of great custom actions out there right now. Some are better than others for specific applications, some stray a little in the tolerance department from time to time, but they are all pretty good on average. We are located in the metro-plex and keep a few Stillers in stock. So if you would like to look at one in person while you are making your decision, feel free to stop by.

Those S&S precision rifles are a ball to shoot! Thanks Tom for letting me shoot your toys! Amazing accuracy out of the stiller actions! Good components and fine building equal a fine shooting rifle! All you got to do is your part after that!
