Looking for a Suggestion for a Red Dot Scope

Posted this on the Around the Campfire section, but as someone suggested I may get more help here....and I think he is right.


I have a little 17 HMR that I would like to put a Red Dot Scope on. There is no place for open sights so I am a bit stuck with using a scope. Since it is going to be a goof off gun, so I do not want to spend a ton of money. Any suggestions?

I saw some cheapos at Academy (Tascos and BSAs) but I have never bought a cheap scope and a red dot so I am a bit out of my element.

I'd go with a variable power scope. I think putting a red dot on that rifle would do it a little injustice. Just my opinion. If you are dead set on a red dot. Look at the Vortex Strikefire ($150'ish) or Bushnell TRS-25 ($100). They are both reputable and won't break the bank.

I have a Bushnell red dot on top of my AR. It probably ran me right at $100 and I really like it. You can change the sight to four options and there are 9 levels of brightness.

Only problem with mine is it's 1X magnification and I'd like 2-3X.

It's very accurate up to 100 yards--never tested it much further.

Thanks guys. I was thinking red dot since I would only be taking shots around 50 yards or so (squirrels, rabbits, etc).

I agree, those two have very solid reputations for quality at that price point. Lots of folks use them as "range" or even primary optics on AR15's.

If you want a cheap red dot get the Vortex sparc. It's around $100 and is the best (probably the only decent) cheap red dot out there.

It's small and it works.

The Vortex strikefire is good (for the money) as well but it's quite a bit larger than the sparc.

I recently bought one of the new "SeeAll" sights and mounted it onto a chiappa little badger 22 lr. I had no problem with the iron sights but the "SeeAll" is easier to pick up and for the kids to shoot. It maybe just what your looking for...

I'm running a Vortex Sparc 2 on my AR. It's a great product for the price.

My .17 is so accurate it is just fun to shoot with a regular scope.
3x9 is deadly on coons and squirrels

For this application you would be better served shooting $2 .22lr shells instead of $15 hmr ammo. The .17 will shine between 100 and 200 yards wil a mid priced 3x9x40 scope.

I did not realize that a 17 would have that much powder behind it to carry it that far which is why I was thinking a red dot would be perfect. Wow. I guess I need to look at the ballistics.
