Two weeks ago I got the chance to do something I have wanted to do since I started hunting. I shot a pig from my bow blind at 20 yards. I was shooting 230 FMJ. I now have the bug to do it again. I realize that I did not use the most capable or devistating ammo but, it got the job done. Now I want to know from the great wealth of GS what would you recommend for a hunting ammo in a 1911 commander size? I do not reload but, my good buddy does and he too is interested in doing this himself. What powder and bullet would yall use. Also is there any off the self ammo you would recommend? Thank you.

185 or 200 grain semi wad cutters. I've killed pigs, coyotes, deer, and a cow with them. The cow was not sport, broken legs and about to drown so it was a no suffering kill. Absolutely devastating rounds, way more so that 230gr hollow points. Feed just fine in my 1911 but I have heard some people say they have feeding issues with them.

Killed em with a 40 S&W with golden saber self defense ammo. Dad's done it with the same and some handloaded 250 gn's in his 45. All of these were pigs shot out of the window of the car driving through the ranch. Hit em in the right place, anything will work. I go with whatever is in the gun, but usually try put in some cast leads of some kind (depending on the pistol)when I'm at the ranch

Anything designed for self defense. I'd look at ammo loaded with the Barnes copper XTP bullets like this: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/999...free-box-of-20

I don't have any experience shooting large animals with my 1911 but my dad shot a hog the other day and I went and helped him load it up and clean it. After we cleaned it (missing one shoulder the other was just deboned) we stung him up by his head to do some broad head tests thru his shields (large boar). Well I wanted to se what my gold dot .40's would do against a hogs shields. We put a piece of ply would against the back side and shot from about 15 yards. Bullet went thru both shields and bones and thru the plywood. Like I said I know it's not .45 just trying to give u the info I have. I won't hesitate now to pull out my carry gun loaded with gold dots and fire away.
Oh here's a pic of the pig. They are on a little incline wich makes him look a little bigger but he was still very big
