300BLK is a good choice. Low recoil and knock down power. Get one of those AAC single shots. I have one a love it.

He's definitely bigger than your average 9 year old. And thank you for all the good suggestions I will continue to do my research. I'm really tempted to do a 300 blk, but mostly because I want one. Reloading .308 also sounds like a good choice for continuity's sake. What did you guys start out on and are you still shooting it?

I have been looking into a gun for my daughters. I really liked the information on this table. http://www.chuckhawks.com/recoil_table.htm
Like others have said, I am looking at a 243 for them. I think they could handle more, especially my oldest, but I don't want her to develop a flinch because she is afraid of the recoil.

If he's a good shot and won't be taking super long distance shots, a scoped AR would be good IMO.
Adjustable buttstock, mild recoil..and loaded with some bonded 62-64 grain bullets will easily do the job (especially with neck shots).
These are just my $.02 as I feel everybody should own at least one AR based rifle.

My son was started on 7mm-08 and .270. Ballistically they are about the same. He started shooting those at age 7. When coached properly, an after having spent alot of time with him shooting .22, he never developed a single problem. As previously stated, kids will surprise you. Good luck with whatever choice you make sir.

22-250, 243, 7mm-08, all great for kids OR Adults IMO. I "really" like the American in a 22-250 for several reasons. Main one, particularly for kids IMO, is it's relatively light weight and even thou not the BEST synthetic stock it takes some worry from those slight scratches inevitable on wood stocks. My Dad bought his first grandson a Winchester 22-250 many years past, all 3 grandsons took their first Buck with it. All 3 were always worried about "scratching" the beautiful wood stock every hunt. At least from our experience when they are young it's a little easier to take the stress out of accidents to the stock? Sounds probably strange, but just what we prefer these days. Good luck and have fun.
