    AR flashlights at Academy

Academy has two AR flashlights with barrel mounts. You may have seen them; they're in gray boxes hanging on the display over the scopes. One is a 220 lumens for $49.95. Another is a 550 lumens for $79.95. It might be 510 or 520, I can't remember, but it's 5-something. Seems like that would be overkill.

With a 3 MOA red dot sight, would the 220 lumen light be OK for up to 100 yards? This would be mainly for foxes, yotes and maybe some other varmints that might be prowling around our property at night.

Only 220 lumens?? I would look at getting something a little more in my opinion.

That 500 lumen light is still low for 100 yards IMO. Youd be surprised how bright that is not....What brand are they? I just cant see a cheap academy light being worth a flip, but you never know....

Just save up the few extra bucks for a EWT or Sniper hunting light.

I've got 2 of the EWT lights, a 100 and a 250, my Dad just bought the shiny new Sniper 66LR, it is pretty neat.

Sure, they cost more, but they are proven performers. I use the 100 on my bow, and my rifle. I've taken truckloads of varmints and pigs with it. The 250 is for slightly longer range, and it has been tremendously useful as well.

I use 1" scope rings on my lights, to mount them to a picatinny rail. The quick release UTG mounts are around $20 per pair on Amazon, and work like a champ.

For use at 100 yards the beam patern, and how well it will focus is pretty important. I've got a streamlight that uses 2x CR123 batteries that makes 100 yards easy, and it is 'only' rated at like 150-200 lumens,...but I've got a light that is really bright ---about 500 lumens---but it doesn't focus in like the Streamlight.

              Just my opinion,

IMO, not enough lumens by a long shot, pun intended.

This is exactly what I've heard before... that "lumens" isn't some kind of Holy Grail. Some 100 lumen lights throw a real tight, focused beam that will light up a coyote at 100 yards easily. Some 500 lumen lights scatter the light so wide, they won't light up the side of a barn. Or so I've heard.

I know there are all kinds of great lights out there, but we can't spend a lot of $$$ on it. I'd say $75-$100 max. And I don't beat this gun to death, either. It's not for jungle combat or poppin' ragheads in Baghdad. It hangs on the wall most of the time, then if I feel like there's a 'yote or fox or skunk prowling around, I'll go after it. That's about it.

I don't see the exact model I've been using. I'll look at it when I get in my truck tomorrow. But you can get a very high quality and very bright light for your price range. There are some great deals on eBay also.

Do you want to light up your target or just get barely enough light to see that there is something down there to put a red dot on?

I am using a small Fenix PD35 at something like 960 lumens. If you don't want to light up the world, don't use it.

The model that I'm using is the Super Tac. I just looked on ebay, they can be had for under a hundred dollars. I can tell you that this thing will give you plenty of light at 100 yards.

I used it with a 2-7 power Nikon scope and could easily see the jackrabbits.
