They also make a heavy barrel stainless model I have not seen.
Wouldn't work as the rim diameters are different. Not just a longer HMR.

IMO, a 17 Ackley Hornet or 17 Hornady Hornet is superior since it can be handloaded up/down

17 WSM ammo is scarce in my area

Here's a picture of the smaller 17's from left to right 17Hornet Ackley Improved, 17Hornet or Hornady Hornet, 17WSM, and 17HMR. (WSM and HMR are rim fires)

Bullets are 25 gr Hornady, 20 gr Hornady, Berger 30 gr, Berger 25 gr, VN 20gr, and Berger 15gr.

I like the sound of the 17 hornet, something about the small size of the cartridge really intrigues me. It won't outshoot my 204, and that has me wondering wether or not I really need it?

Be warned, 17 cals are fun to shoot and are very addictive!

I agree with above if it fails to catch (LIKELY) you're out of luck for ammo.

If the 17 hornet fails you can always make brass from plentiful 22 hornet brass.
