I have had a time trying to find a load for my C. Sharps with 350 gr. cast bullets. Jacketed bullets and modern powders was no problem. I got some American Pioneer FFg powder, and loaded 54 grains like their literature says, but it was too compressed and groups were about 6 inches at 50 yards. Using the same powder, I loaded 50 grains which just touches the bottom of the bullet. This is my first 5 shot group at 100 yards. With peep sights, I would guess there is some user error, too.

Got my C. Sharps 45-70 Load
Be happy to share some load data if you are interested in shooting real black powder. Have some Goex and Swiss powder loads for 45-70, 44-70, 40-65 and 38-55. If we can get an express from San Antonio I'm sure I could come up with a pound or two of powder if needed. Load I was shooting in 45-70 was RP brass, 63 gr Swiss 1 1/2 Fg, 30 thousands compression, 60 thousands card wad, 520gr Lyman cast bullet (30-1 alloy) WW large rifle primer. Black powder ( real black not substitute) loading is very unique and different from that new fangeled smokeless stuff. 1 to 2 moa accuracy very do-able. Oh, and SPG bullet lube.Last edited by PapaD; 10-10-2014, 08:22 PM.
