The problem with the Matchking for hunting performance is inconsistent terminal performance. It may work great. But it might not. They've been known to pencil through or over-fragment. The A-Max gives much more consistent results.
MRC, I read your reply before you edited it. My experience has been vastly different than yours. I've killed plenty of critters with Berger hunting bullets. 115 grain 257 Weatherby, 130 grain 6.5 Grendel, 130 grain 260 Remington, 140 grain 6.5-284, 168 grain .308, 185 grain 300Win mag. All have been one shot kills and all have passed through as well.
My one experience shooting match kings as best I can tell I got not expansion because there was no blood at all. And yes I know I hit the deer because she ran off dragging her opposite shoulder as she ran away. Haven't shot them since.
That's why I crawfished after thinking a minute, this debate has been beat to death. If it works for you great, if it works for me then great. We all have an opinion and they are all right or maybe wrong who knows. Shoot we all kill deer with a pointy stick, a bullet should be no problem......right.
To let you in on a secret I'm shooting amax' this year because that's what I have on hand.
thank you guys for your conversation and back and forth banter….. I appreciate the wisdom and experience gleaned from it. I have a good starting point for loads which is what I am after…..yall rock face
Barry try this at your own risk because it is a heavily compressed load.
Lapua brass trimmed to 2.005"
50 grains RL17
Federal GM215M primers
175 Berger VLD Hunting
COAL 2.870"
I'm getting an average velocity of 2809fps with a 20" 5R Milspec Remington 700 through my YHM can.
Well under an inch at 200.
"Try at your own risk!!"
Key words here
From experiences and reading, a 5R barrel will generate more speed due to less friction. A standard 6 or 8 land barrel can't do the same.
Build up to the max slowly and see. Good luck.
