    Gunsmith Help Needed

I have an older Remington 700 ADL and the shells slide back in the magazine area and the bolt will not pick them up when I try to load one. I have to use my thumb to slide one forward, and then the bolt will catch it like normal.

A little backstory, I had extractor issues several years ago and I didn't like the prices I was getting around me. My grandpa said he knew a guy in Houston that he would take it to. Sure enough he fixed the extractor for a good price. However, since then this gun has been having the issues loading shells. During the years since the gunsmith worked on it, my grandpa has passed away and I don't know who he used, so I can't go back to him about the issue.

Is it possible that the gunsmith did not put something back? Or do I have something else damaged that I need to replace?

It's possible the magazine follower is in backwards.

yep or the follower spring could be weak and try replacing with a new/different one ... $9 fix

It's a 270. Thanks for the replies. I'll try to mess with it later on. It gets frustrating when I have it in the gun rack in the ranch vehicles and the shells slide back in the magazine and I can't get a shell loaded when hogs are running everywhere.

It cant have anything to do with the extractor and if the follower was in backward it would be fairly obvious. A weak follower spring as has already been suggested is most likely. If it's not that, the cartridge must be catching on something preventing it from feeding. Are you using factory ammo or handloads?

I mentioned the extractor because I had an earlier issue with it. After I got it fixed is when the shells quit cycling correctly. When I load them I can work the action and they load/unload properly. The problem comes when I have the gun with the barrel pointed upwards, the shells move slightly to the rear and the bolt won't catch them and load them.

I am going to order a new follower spring and try that. Maybe it will be a simple fix.
