My son's looking for one for Grizzly defense in Montana. I gave him my 450 Marlin guide gun last year to keep in his truck for when he goes to get his meat pack, What's he looking to pay for a Ruger Alaskan- I figured about $900 new?

I love my Super Redhawk in .454. It has the 7.5" barrel. I don't like the 2.5" barrel on the Alaskan. As big as the Super Redhawk is, a 4" or 5" barrel would be just as easy to pack around and would be a big improvement. Talo Distributors was offering it in a 5" barrel, I don't have any info on availability or price.

I've owned a Ruger Alaskan, darn good gun but a little stiff on recoil for the average guy.
For big bear in life or death situations I'd want a good hard cast bullet, none of them plastic or hollow point thingys..Last edited by Mike Javi Cooper; 09-22-2014, 06:19 AM.

The Ruger Alaskan 454 is a good choice for the requirement. I have 2 of them. The recoil is definitely a handful and can be brutal with the 360 grain Buffalo Bore loads. No 44 magnum is even comparable. Recoil will it be noticeable if you're ever caught in a situation where defense is actually needed!
I have a Taurus Ragin Bull in 454 Casull as well but it's a scoped hunter that is awesome on big game with the 360 grain Buffalo Bore load that is shoots extremely accurately. It is easier to shoot tight groups with than my 12" fluted bbl S&W 460 XVR Performance Center is with the heavy loads. I get 3-4" groups at 200 yards with 200 grain Hornadys from the 460 but can only hold that tight out to about 150 yds with the heavy loads. Some of this is due to recoil I believe.
The 454 can shoot 45 Long Colt ammo, the 460 can shoot those and 454 Casull.
