Hint for folks taking CHL class

I finally got around to taking a CHL class. Mostly because I drive from TX to AL and TX to OK a lot and figured it might be nice to do so legally. Never been stopped, but one never knows. So, I get smart and figure by .44 Mag is going to be a bit much shooting 50 rounds in not too much time. So, brilliant me, picks up a nice little S&W Body Guard .380 (over all length less than 5"). You'd have thought, in 71 years, I'd have known better. It was, without a doubt, the wrong gun for the application. I'd have been a lot better off shooting my .44 wheel gun. Even if it was single action. I passed with room to spare, but it was not a comfortable feeling and my target was not something I'd was anybody to see. That little gun beat the snot out of me. And to be honest, I didn't have much of an idea of what was going on. Size matters! It really does! Use a full sized weapon, even if you have to borrow one.

And that's the truth. I'm just saying don't even try it with a small compact handgun unless you've done a lot of hand gun shooting, and maybe not even then. I know if I had to do it again I'd be using a full sized, or even medium sized weapon. I was used to shooting 9 and 10 rings from 25/30 yards figured it would be a piece of cake with the .380. I was all over the map. Just dumb donkey on my part.

Yup doesn't matter, I almost qualified with my 29 44mag just for giggles, but I shot a 45 since we were all shooting the same with the rest of the family and I didn't want to mess with reloading as much.

I always loaned out a glock 17 for that very reason.

Kinda off topic here, but how do you like the Body Guard overall? I've been thinking about picking one up for the wife.

I carry one all the time with no complaints.

Good advice EdO. I've seen targets at the qualifying shoot that looks like they were shot with a 12 gauge with buckshot from a distance, and the person still passed. I'm glad you were able to qualify with it, but I'm also glad that you learned a valuable lesson to be passed on to others. Thanks for posting about your experience with it.

I have also offered to loan out my XDm-9 full size for that same purpose. Most people can easily qualify with it comfortably. But I still recommend that those who shoot it to qualify also go to the range and get accustomed to it before the class / qual.

                      All the best,
                      Glenn

I own or have owned the Bodyguard, LCP, Diamondback DB380 and the Kel-Tec P3AT. Of those micro .380's, I like the Bodyguard the best and it is now the only one that I carry when I can carry nothing else (which is rare). I also carry it on duty as a backup weapon.

I have had no problems with any of the others but the Bodyguard was more manageable for me. I think the grip fits my hand better than the other micros but they are all snappy simply because of being a tiny weapon.

Like always, it is subjective to how it feels in your hands but it is the best mouse gun for me.... so far. But if someone comes out with another (like Glock just did), I am not brand loyal and will try to find one that is better.

Id buy the glock 42, I bought the sig 238 for my wife and I liked it but I couldn't shoot it very well. I bought the 42 for my wife and it will out shoot the 238,LC9,LCP, etc. It honestly shoots awesome and im NOT a Glock fan.

As for the other rule change in CHL it used to be that you couldn't be able to tell you were carrying, not all it has to be is covered by clothing.

I almost qualified with my AR pistol...but went with a Sig Stainless Elite 9mm. Shot perfect, which is no big deal with that gun...and the instructor deducted several points. Said he never turned in a perfect score to the state, just was not gonna happen.

You were perfectly legal to be carrying in your vehicle to begin with.
