I have 2 grand in my HMR ($300 in the trigger alone) and honestly, there are $250 rifles that can hang with it. Maybe not outshoot it, but definitely shoot groups just as small

the HMR cartridge is scary accurate no matter what platform : factory off the shelf rifle or custom build

as noted above, my suggestion: buy a $250-300 rifle and dump the rest in ammo and quality optics. 4x12 or 4.5x14 with an adjustable objective for fine tuning

the man asked about 17wsm.... Up side- The extra energy is GREAT imo. It seems like a really cool round. Very unique right now. which its always cool to have something your buddy doesn't, and everybody has an HMR these days. Longer range than HMR or .22mag.
      down side
in texas, there centerfire vs rimfire isn't and issue it will be a tough sell. In the places up north where rimfire only is a rule on public land it will get a lot of love because of the capability on coyote sized critters and down, but whats cost on 17wsm ammo? If it is more than 40 cents a shot then I can get 5.56 ball for that... quick look found it for 95 cents a round. I can buy two 5.56 for that. Also the sob will be loud. the shape of the ammo doesn't look very conducive for a box mag which is a must any rifle I buy now.
The volquarzen would be great for when I hit the lotto... along with that Christensen arms and a .50.....

I would buy a .204 or .222 first... I LOVE the .204 my cuz has

however... if you get one CAN I COME PLAY WITH IT? LOOKS REALLY COOL!

I have a wsm that I bought before Christmas last year. I had a hard time finding ammo and ordered a case of 20 grain and a case of 25 from Midway USA. It took about 6 weeks to come in but now I'm stocked up pretty good. I sighted it in and have been impressed. I have killed a few coyotes and several hogs up to almost 200 and it will definitely do the job. I like it because it doesn't ring my kids ears if I have to grab a gun and shoot out of the window while driving around one of our places. I have alot of center fire rifles but the wsm has plenty of power without the blast. If you do alot of shooting and will go through a ton of ammo, it may not be the best choice for you.

I have a. WSM that I love. It shoots very well out to 200 yds. And it seems to handle the wind much better than my HMR. I use it for everything from squirrels to crows and even yotes. I pack it for my shorter range predator hunts often. Ammo here in KS is pretty easy to find.

I don't know if they still do but Academy (multiple Locations) had plenty of ammo for these but didn't offer the gun. (at the time)
