    Adding Chokes to Remington 1100

My Dad has a nice 1100 in 20 ga. that I'd like to take off his hands. It has a factory full choke barrel on it. This gun falls in a group for which you cannot find a replacement barrel in another choke. I've scoured the web looking for one and the consensus is they don't exist.

With that said, I may send to Briley to get the barrel threaded. Is that even possible on a gun like this? (I don't know that much about gunsmithing capabilities these days) It has a 28" barrel. I'd like to get it set up for a flush fit modified or similar choke.

Before I call Briley, does anyone know what their lead time is? Is there someone else I should consider letting do it?

    Thanks in advance.

Yes sir Casey that is one of briley's specialties. Got a buddy that had chokes put in an old model 12 Winchester against my advice, but it turned out nice... I had the same situation several years ago. Had a 12 and 20 gauge 870 Left Hand with fixed chokes... Ultimately traded them in on Brownings with chokes instead of going for the mod. This was probably 10 years ago, and charge was like $100 plus the tubes you wanted. If it's a ribbed bbl., they may have to rework the rib. If I were you, I'd have them shorten the bbl. to 26"... 28 is mighty long for a 20. Would make it quicker to point.

    Good luck with it.

Getting threads cut in a shotgun barrel is something that a local gunsmith might be able to do.

There are a handful of popular thread patterns it seems. The last one I had done I just told the smith to match the "Rem Choke" threads, and it has worked out great for me (an old 870).

I have no idea what Briley might charge, I think I paid somewhere around $100 for the threading and a choke or two.

Can you elaborate on not being able to find a barrel for it? Is it an LW or LT?

If you just want a modified it can just be rechoaked

I believe being Pre-77 makes it incapable of accepting the newer replacement barrels. It's been a while since I researched, but I recall reading replacement barrels for these were virtually non-existant.

I've got an old 20ga Rem 1100LT barrel in my gun closet if you want to try it.

I'm pretty sure it won't. Dad is getting the serial number for me, but I believe it ended in X, which puts it in a group where no barrels after 77 will fit it.

                  C

in order to install aftermarket chokes, the barrel wall thickness has to be measured and be within a specific diameter. If to thin, chokes can't be installed. Your barrel should be OK

Briley is one of the best, yet one of the most expensive ..... cry once and you're done

While you're at it, have them lengthen the forcing cone and install a center bead and front Bradley bead

                    I like your suggestions.

Who else is reputable...and within the same distance Briley is to San Antonio? If I could trust it to be done locally, I'd do that as well.

Briley can open the barrel up to another choke but it will still be a fixed choke. My dad had this done to an LC Smith, and a side by side hammer 12 gauge my grandfather gave him when he married my Mom.

I had the same thing done to my grandfathers 1100 12 ga. back in the early 90's by a gunsmith in Floydada, TX. I was worried about the wall thickness as it was a skeet choke but he said it wouldn't be a problem.

I had it done and never have had an issue after all these years and a several thousand rounds. I even hunted geese and ducks with it back when steel shot first came out.

I wouldn't hesitate sending it to Briley or having a reputable GS do the work.

Mine are Tru-Choke (small diameter, flush mount chokes), btw. From what I just read aftermarket chokes are made of harder steel: Tru-Choke

I have no doubts Briley can make your chokes Casey...if they can do them on thin 3200 skeet tubes, then a full choke 1100 should be no problem.

Do you plan to shoot clays with it?? Only reason I ask is I hade an older 1100 16ga & ran into the same issue. I just bought a new old stock 28" mod bbl...for hunting, it's all I needed.

                          good luck

Having Briley do the work will help retain the value of the gun Casey.

You might contact Jim Eyster with Heritage Gunsmiths. Very good work. Ph# (740) 625-6131
