    Scope Recommendation - Subsonic

I am looking for a scope recommendation from the wealth of knowledge here on the green screen.

    Here are the Criteria:

    Savage Model 10 308
    30 MM Mount
    SWR Specwar Suppressor
    Good in Low Light
Will be used mostly with subsonic ammo less than 150 yds
May be interested in using with supersonic ammo as well
    $400 or less

Right now I am looking at the Falcon Menace 4-14x44 or the SWFA SS 10x42 or 6x42. Opinions welcome.

In that price range the SS 10x42 will be hard to beat.

BUT, i would try and find a 3.5-10x50 Leupold used for that kind of money. Better glass. And get it with the cds knobs so you can adjust for the drop. Or send it off to leupold and have them put some m1 knobs on it so you can use it with different things. Just learn your adjustments.

AS most of my shots will be less than 100 yds with the subsonic ammo, do you think I am better off with 10x42 or 6x42?

In the 10x42, is the side focus worth an extra $100?

I was thinking about the Nikon P-300 BLK 2-7x32 BDC SuperSub. My thought was that the BDC for a 300 BLK sub load should be pretty close to a 308 sub load. Has the same size bullets running at the same speeds. I haven't tested or researched it. It's just another one of my crazy ideas.

My thought there is that shooting subsonic ammo at such a short distance that I wouldn't see the benefit in a $1000 scope.

It depends. Here are my thoughts,

Subs are fun to shoot but pretty worthless to hunt with. Yeah they will kill but they dont pack much punch very far out. They will still spook animals on impact.

I shoot a specwar also on several different calibers and dont even bother with subs. I would rather be able to take a 6-700 yard shot if it presents itself than be left without a shot at 300 because you have subs only.

Also, if you are shooting close distances, the side focus is great. Depending on HOW CLOSE you may look into something that lets you focus really close up. I am running a vari x 2c on my ruger 77/17 4-12x40 with the AO. I can get a clear sight picture at 15-20 yards if needed. You cant do that with most rifle scopes.

The other thing i would consider is glass quality. If this is going to be a late night early morning pig gun, which from the sounds of it it is, you wont be happy with a cheaper optic. Spend more money on a higher quality lower power scope if your shots will be within a couple hundred yards and you will have more shooting light longer before you have to start turning on lights or looking into a NV set up.

So decide if you want a subsonic only gun, which i strongly disagree with. Or if you want to be able to shoot supers as well. Then start narrowing down the options.

When i made the suggestion for a leupold with the m1 turrets, this was why. Figure out your ballistics and keep a card or a file on your phone or stock. Have one for supers and subs. Then you have one scope that will do it all and not be stuck with turrets built around subs.

Also, later on you can get leupold to install a reticle with subtensions that will meet your needs if you dont like turning turrets. Lets say you are presented with a 150 yard shot with subs and you need 6 moa. one second and you put the target on the line and boom. done. And you will have windage subtensions in your reticle as well which is awfully nice when shooting live targets.

                            sub $400 Scope

I would take a look at Nikon's MONARCH 3 2.5-10x42 BDC reticle. While it's not a 30 mm scope it will certainly do what you are wanting your scope to do. It is currently under a Promo right now for around $330. I'm sure some of this site's sponsors are participating in the promo and can help you out. This scope will let you get a great sight picture, the sub-sonic ammunition and the BDC reticle combined with Nikon's Spot On Ballistic Program will help your accuracy considerably. Plus if you decide to shoot reg. .308 ammo you will be good to go. I have a M-308 on my suppressed Rem. 700 SPS .308.
I haven't shot any sub-sonic ammo with it but suppressed 168 gr. projectiles are certainly a lot quieter then unsuppressed ones.
