    I'm completely ignorant

When it comes to scope mounts and rings. I'm trying to make sure I get the right set up for my new Sako 300. After talking with trophy8 and Blake, I have a sense of what brand I want to go with. The gun has aluminum bases that came with the rifle (which I think im going to get by with for right now until I can get a steel 20 moa).Click image for larger version

I'm leaning towards these Talley rings for my 4.5x14x50 Zeiss. From what I read high rings are what I need and 1 in to fit the tube. Like the pic. Any other thoughts on this? Click image for larger version

From their website it looks like talley sizes use ring base height (dimension B in picture)

Since you have a 1 inch tube with a 50mm objective, that gives you .48" minimum base height, and the high rings are 0.5". That should work fine. You may be able to go lower if your barrel profile and rail height allow.

I have a Leupold VX-6 mounted in Talley 1 piece medium rings. But my scope tube is 30mm.

      Also have a rem 700 with a 50mm Leupold VX-R. It's close though.

Mediums should fit with a rail.

I think every scope ring I put on a gun from now on will have a tactical (picatinny) top. Never know what gun you might want to put a varmint light on. I only have them on two rifles right now but any changes to scope from now on will probably include them.
